Battleships were pretty much dead at that point in the war so America not throwing away Iowa and her sisters was nice. They supported and were used to shell Okinawa which were the intended purpose of battleships. Ship to ship combat was never the primary factor, that was saved for subs, carriers, and destroyers.
And I wouldn't say it was fierce opposition, Yamato was outnumbered because Japan suffered great losses and threw away most of their aircraft giving Yamato no support but her fate was far sealed at that point. If she lived she would have been scrapped or nuked. There is no future for Yamato after the war.
