I feel that most of the grimsokyo appeal comes from this sense of insecurity. People who are insecure in their interest in Touhou and as such exaggerate or at least primarily focus on the darker subtext of the setting, namely to avoid being dismissed as entirely cutesy nonsense and entirely fluff.

That's far too narrow, cutesokyo obviously isn't just marketable plushies. Comedy fanworks and fluffy yuri romances also very obviously fall under cutesokyo for the most part.

On the contrary there are canonical statements describing outsides choosing to build a life for themselves in the HV. The "Gensokyo sucks" mentality is a very blatant push back against people who like the setting, and leans primarily on exaggerating the worst aspects of entering Gensokyo. Fact is that if you're not specifically being picked up by Yukari as food and you can make it to the Hakurei Shrine or the HV, you are safe. Human villagers are specifically off limits for predatory behavior. The whole "no human would ever want to go to and stay in Gensokyo" is blatantly untrue and itself usually comes across as grimsokyo wank.

Reimu is a good girl nonetheless.
