The whole Persona and Shadow is essentially what George talks about in ep 1 in an attempt to explain Maria's weird behavior, that people have their own hidden selves (shadow) that they don't show to anyone and that people behave and act differently depending on the environment. Do you talk the same way on 4chan the same way you talk at home? Do you talk at home the same way you do with friends? Or with a date?

A common understanding of this is what is known as 'having masks'. Like the old saying, give a person a mask and he'll show you his true face. I'm sure everyone's heard of that.

I'm reading this vndb posts but they're rather boring since he tries to explain DiD (multiple personality disorder) and confusing it with different personality. I would argue that Yasu whole problem is neither.
DiD develops mostly from severe abuse during childhood, where it's used as a defense mechanism to evade the abuse. I've read reports that children feel as though their consciousness floats away and they don't feel any pain. From there, different personalities take over different emotional state and form their own personalities for different tasks. This is how people can have a large number of different personalities. However, the main persona tends to remain consistently a child who never grows up and never shows itself. This is rather consistent among people with DiD.
This isn't what Yasu suffers from overall in Umineko. I don't even think there's a right medical explanation.

And Jung's view of different persona is more on situational and personal guilt. While it fits Yasu's struggle, it wouldn't make her see imaginary friends. Jung's view on DiD was limited in his time and mixed his own theory to explain DiD and doesn't mesh well with research and interviews over the years.

Arghh, now the arguments in the vndb posts are getting boringly petty. Not worth reading unfortunately and no interesting information to be gained.
