I haven't seen anything close to the Katawa Shoujo fireworks graphically so far so when Japan decides they want to do that kind of stuff in their VNs, then that functionality will probably be hacked in their existing engines or some new engine based on 20 year old thinking will be made.

But as far as Ren'py goes, it's doomed to be western based. And as I said, if you want lowest common denominator, you really should be targeting Javascript. But looking at a Japanese programming languages survey based on job boards from HROG, it seems like Python is behind even C/C++. And the pay is higher in Python or Javascript than in C/C++ so yeah. It is abysmal though, I make like 3 times that in the US doing C++ developer work...
