That's true for most things. It's the gradual corporatization and consequent monetization of just about anything creative. Games are a good example; they went from being something by nerds for nerds to corporate cash cows where they try to suck as much money as possible out of them.

Disgaea 4 recently got a PC release. And the steam page has an "item shop" where you can buy EXP boosters and level-up potions for $1-2 each. For a 10 year old singleplayer game. Stuff like this is probably only gonna get worse -- I think paid mods and stuff will eventually start becoming commonplace as well. When you think about it vtubers as an example are just an evolution of this. They're like the Youtubers of the late 2000s and early 2010s except people are now willing to drown them in donations for every little thing they do (or in exchange for doing something for the donator on-stream, like saying their name). In short, it feels like a lot of stuff became less "I'm doing this because I like it" and more "How much money can we make from this?

Though if we're complaining about old times it really sucks how hard it is to find anybody reasonable to play games with. I've been playing a fighting game recently and wanted somebody to spar/practice against and surprise - they're all on Discord. Literally can't find anybody outside of it. It's a real hassle, I don't want to join some gay chat room just to play a game with somebody.

Anybody have any experience talking with Japs online? Is there anything in particular they like to talk about or that will get them talking? I've made a couple of friends but it's really hard chatting with them, even on subjects they like I have to lead most of our conversations. I know enough Japanese to carry on basic conversations but it's a really awkward spot to be in.

I don't know if it's just a Japanese thing or if I just have bad conversationalists as friends.

I don't play the game but it looks like they suspended the ability to pay for stuff, everything related to it on the website at least is greyed out. This was likely planned since a few months ago so too I doubt they'll cancel it over a spike in players which they're probably expecting anyways.

I'm more surprised they're not doing anything as a final big bang before it shuts down, like letting people roll the gacha for free or something. It's depressing seeing online-only games shut down since you can never go back to them.
