You're not supposed to learn individual kanji, they're rarely words.
In compounds, or with okurigana, they are words. Learn the meaning and reading of them, and eventually, the sense of the kanji will follow. You couldn't stop it if you tried, actually.

Managed to grind both my Anki and iKnow.jp in under an hour today with a 70% success rate. I realize this is probably pretty shit but I'm fucking pleased nonetheless as it's a step up for me. How did your grindan go today, fellas?
