Reference doesn't stop to be a reference in the absence of person saying those exact words, and, which is more important, you knew that already. The distinction between quote and reference is not a strict one anyway, so it makes sense to replace one for another, especially in the 4chan's markup-poor enviroment. Therefore you should stop being such a meme. If you would counterargue that all you actually want is to stop people from using markup while it's possible to say the same thing with words, then I'd say that you should have said so instead of falling for a meme.
