You just said your coworkers saw kana+kanji and thought it was Chinese. They probably don't even know what j-idols are like... unless you showed them the cockroach video during lunch break.

As for coming out publicly as a fan- my closest friends know about it. Otherwise it's just not something I bring up with people. I wear picture related and a bunch of other idol-themed t-shirts that could pass as ordinary hobby shirts. No one's ever asked about them. (Chink living in burgerland btw)
