Meta ones first if you're new. You won't understand why but just do it. I've played for 4 months and I speak from (relatively fresh) experience. Prime example would be that I had Kitakami since forever and didn't level her because I didn't like Shibafu art, now she's my highest level ship for reasons other TTKs can give you a page of.

You will understand the importance of meta ships when an event rolls around. Its debatable whether gear or base stats is more important but since the best gear often comes on the best ships this isn't really a big concern. There are outliers (20cm type 3s on Mikuma and Kinugasa) but strong kai/kai2s take precedence, especially those with decent combat stats and rare equips (Sendai comes to mind for her night recon plane).

When push comes to shove, these girls that you may not have liked will be the ones that create invaluable experiences with you by pulling through for you when you're in dire straits. They will save your ass while your resources are drained, morale gutted and sleep deprived at 3am in the morning with 1 day till the event ends. And you will, in time, come to love them.

Jeez is everyone on E5 already? Felt like I lost progress once I went to sleep.

Also I cannot thank Yukikaze enough, at the start of the event she was level 40+ but is still my clear MVP for the event. Many a time has a clear depended on her choice of target for cut-in. Shigure's a close second.
