a lot of people like to repeat the meme that 50% of americans read below a 6th grade level. of course, they don't look any further into it and don't realize that is true for most of the world as well.
if it's truly 50%, then that would correspond to below level 3 in the PIAAC. as you can see, japan has 28%, some countries have 85% below level 3.

you shouldn't aspire for that level.
