When Portugal and other countries started to commerce with Japan, they also brought missionaries. During the short while they were there, they managed to convert a very largegroup of peasants. However, the shoguns of the time saw this as a serious threat to their power, since some particularly fierce peasant revolts were also ones with japanese christian. Of course, shoguns would have none of that and kicked and/or killed all the missionaries and forbade christianity, along with any outsider. However, some underground groups survived and thrived.

And thus Japan managed to stay in the Feudal era for a while longer.

Silly people. Everybody knows that if you want to weaken a religion you tolerate it. If you want to make it stronger you make martyrs out of them.
