Sure, but you don't need to be a writer to read VNs, so that's a different story.
When I was first learning English back in high school, I never had an epiphany or anything like that, I just used the language in my daily life because it was fun, and it became easier and easier as time went on. You start picking up cool words at first, then you move on to cool phrases, and that's when your "inner voice" is formed. To me, fluency is reached when you make the language your own; when you're not just forming sentences to explain yourself, but you can confidently play around with your language a bit. Poetry is good, but perhaps humor is a better litmus test for language fluency.

Yup, go for it. Just preorder that fucking Tsukihime remake, and when it arrives, dive right in. It will be too deep of course, but at least you will be looking at Arc's smiling face as you drown in kanji. Oh, the things we do for love.
