The thing is that the first generation Muscats is more solid and successful, they managed to have a sold out final concert in a big venue. So the gimmick did work back then. That is the goal of the current generation but even then they still struggling to reach that goal. For sure they're not that big compared to countless idol groups out there but the issue here is that to even emulate the (moderate) success of their predecessor they still failed.
Maybe the gimmick is wearing thin or idol group competition is getting too brutal. I heard it's something like warring states period for those idol group right now.

Well regarding your questions about Muscats member, they're varied. Some of them are potentially nasty but wasted by their studio (like Yume Kana). I don't know what's you consider "vanilla stuff" but major studios often do something like bukkake, large gangbang, creampies, light bondage etc too so these girls have done those stuff.
