let's talk about shipgirl metaphysics
1) Using gameplay mechanics as canon is silly, especially for things like dupes and magic buckets, but can be used to get an idea of how the world works
2) Science shipgirls are gay and lame, magic/mystical shipgirls are where it's at
3) Fanon for characterizations is invariably shit, but for metaphysics it can have some decent and cool ideas

So with that out of the way, let's talk about the natures of shipgirls and abyssals, and the soul
so the anime canon actually presents a pretty interesting way of looking at shipgirls, which is backed up by more recent things in the game. This is probably the only good thing to come out of the anime. That is, the idea that every ww2 warship has two souls that it has split into. So the good turns into the KanMusu, the bad the Abyssal. This is shown with the movie, which heavily implies that when the two fubukis fought, the bad was purified and the souls merged. This same idea is shown with Crane Princess and Zuikaku, where the event clearly showed that we have a good zuikaku going out to face her literal demons
Another way to look at shipgirls is the way that most (western) fanon (from like 4 years go) does. Most fanon shows the abyssal war as a great cycle of souls. There is only one soul per warship, which for some reason, comes to a conscious or unconscious decision to become good or bad, and then when a shipgirl dies, it becomes an abyssal, and when an abyssal dies, it becomes a shipgirl. This is a great cycle, and is also supported by the game, with most bosses very clearly being the abyssal version of the girl they drop when cleared, and many boss sinking lines showing a purification after sinking. Personally I prefer this one, if only because it has interesting implications on the shipgirls and their personalities, beyond a standard good v. bad plot
