I stumbled across this text on Japaneseonimasks while looking for the origin of kitsune masks:

And I cannot find the original story, because every story I have found is about a fox woman, not a man, and has nothing to do with a mask itself.
Does anyone know the original story and can link to it? Or is it just something they made up?

I thought it was an interesting question, as a Japanese, so I looked into it.
As you found, there are only a very few stories about fox man, and none of them is associated with the origin of fox mask.
It seems this book has collected a story that "夫に化けたが見破られた狐 (The fox who disguised as her husband but was discovered)" but I'm not sure of the detail.

The fox (Inari) belief is very popular in Japan and has a long history, so generally speaking, the origin of such item is often unclear.
It seems wooden masks were used in medieval theater("能, 猿楽"). There are some performances in which fox masks are used. So the old originals would be those performances.
However, the fox masks that are popular today were probably made during the Momoyama period (1573-1600) or the later Edo period (1603-1868). Because they are papier-mâché masks("張り子のお面"), so the prosperity of folk crafts should be linked to the development of cottage industry (paper manufacturing and paper crafts) especially at Edo era.

Anyway, at least I have never heard of anything like the above.
And your question may only be answered by an expert with a very high level of ethno-cultural knowledge.

I just watched KKHTA for the first time. I enjoyed it but I think it would have tingled my autism way more if I discovered it when I was 14 like Touhou itself. Infact I kind of wish I had gotten interested in Touhou before 14 instead of ignoring it thinking "all the characters are girls so it has cooties and is for perverts".
I wonder if I will get autistically obsessed with anything ever again.
