Lack of focus. If his only actual goal were to draw anime, there was next to no reason for him to paint those houses or copy art of a conquistador. Those naked women would contribute to his goal, but even then you do not paint one hundred naked women then have your anime art instantly improve, you still have to actually draw anime.

Considering how the majority of his imagination drawings shown in the year by year summary were either anime or some derivative of anime, as opposed to barns, fruits, or similar, I figured it was safe to assume. Unless of course his goal were to become an observational painter, and he just threw in the fanart for the heck of it, then disregard.

I don't get why anons are so terrified of ending up like this. If you're capable of recognizing flaws in those drawings you're never going to stagnate like that. Stagnation only happens when one isn't able or isn't willing to look at their own work with a critical eye anymore.

>> No.7046809

>>7046791
Being able to recognize flaws in other people's work is one thing, being able to recognize flaws in your own is another. There's some overlap, but learning how to actively detect flaws as you work is a skill in itself, and not inadvertently developing bad habits is a challenge. Being on the look out for them can only go so far. This is why you need skilled artists of a higher level around you who are willing to tell you the truth straight out without sugar coating it. Otherwise, you may spot some problems and avoid some types of stagnation, but other less obvious problems will seep through and corrupt your work over time like a genetic disease.

ngl that is all that's important. maybe there's a guy who just wanted to draw shitty 4 panels in a UPA art style. it would be NICE if he could also bust out a full realism portrait of Abe Lincoln from memory because he's done 500K studies of every living being and understand light, chiaroscuro, spatial composition, etc. How does that demonstrably benefit him working on the thing he wants to draw outside of raw basic applications?

A big problem is that people often conflate fundies with photorealism.
Unless you're trying to go pro and you just want to draw cartoons/anime girls you can do just fine with basic gestures drawing/perspective practice.

His painting is actually pretty solid/good if you look at the bottom right
And his shapes and pencil studies of them are good too

I don't get it, what's your point exactly? that he can't draw anime tits? and draws as a hobby instead of a professional?
Maybe he struggles drawing from imagination, which many people do.
Do you feel better talking him down?
I'm confused why you made this thread

To be honest, his painterly work is really good. I think its easy to forget that there's more than one way to skin a cat, and you end up being a lot better with one approach than another. If I was him, I'd be leaning into a more shapely, painterly attitude when I render anime characters. I think he'd find his stride real quick.
