>Spam undo until you have cleaned the layer
>paste then lower opacity
trace on the right layer
>delete the copied layer

It's the wrong later because the unchangeable hotkey to switch layer is alt+] and I use alt for color picker, and ] for brush size, so at some point I do both at the same time and paint on the wrong layer without noticing for a while.

Everytime you finish with a layer, lock it. Whenever you hear the error sound, it means you were saved by this once again
