If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Is it a problem if I draw too big/small and just scale things? I'm on a 2500x3000 canvas. I usually draw way too small and now I'm drawing too big.

Also help with this drawing. I'm lost on how to continue the torso upwards, no matter what line I use it looks weird. Cause of the crotch? I'm sure it's perspective related.

Trying to learn how the fuck layer blending thing works on Medibang. I suck at coloring, but blending options make the process more bearable. The gun and carrying bag are greyscaled because I didn't bother to color them yet. I don't like how the gun-holding hand has sharp light edges but don't know how to soften it up. The layer order for that hand is basically
>outline
>highlight with "add" blending option
>flat skin color with "color" blending option
>Greyscale
If anyone can give advice for this gun holding hand or just any advice would be appreciated

A week ago I started to seriously try and learn to draw. I’ve been completing the exercises in Dodson’s ‘Keys to Drawing’ while going through Loomis.

I’m getting the hang of constructing the head from different angles. However, every time I try to fill in the blank shape with features, it looks awful, like the woman on bottom right here. I think the problem is I haven’t properly learned how to draw facial features yet.

Should I learn facial features now? Or should I leave the heads blank, or with very rudimentary features, and continue through fun with a pencil onto figure drawing for all it’s worth?

(Also - after FDFAIW, I was going to move onto Vilppu, then Hampton. However I’ve looked up the Bargue drawing course after seeing it ITT and it looks really appealing. Is it worth chucking in a Bargue plate once or twice a week along side Loomis, Vilppu and Hampton?)

Loomis might be a bit advanced for you at this stage. I mean if you want, you can learn facial features (they're also supposed to be constructed in the same way the larger head shape is) but at this stage I think you'd benefit more from going back and doing observational drawing until you're more confident with your lines and can reasonably accurately copy things you see. Otherwise construction is going to frustrate you to no end. /ic/ has known many such cases.

Thanks. So you think just sticking to Dodson and those kinds of exercises are more beneficial at this stage, before learning the construction? I wouldn’t want to do a hundred sketches of things without improving - working smarter and all that. How do I make sure I improve if I’m not following an instructional book like Loomis’ one?

Thankfully I’m really enjoying this and have recently been moved to permanently working from home with like 3 hours a day free to draw so feels good man

>How do I make sure I improve if I’m not following an instructional book like Loomis’ one?
Always compare your drawings to the reference after you're done and make a note of every part you got wrong.
This is actually an advantage of doing observational as you don't need a teacher to see where you fucked up. But it can still be beneficial to post it on here for example, to get other people's opinions. Keep doing both of these things. Get feedback, fix your mistakes, learn.

Oh, sorry, I detect another pitfall. Lower your expectations. Loomis or not, hundred sketches isn't anywhere near enough to see noticeable improvement. It's gonna be a long and slow journey so take it easy.

Erik Olson has one weakness, and that is he relies TOO much on perspective rules for his work.

The idea perspective learning is sort of like
1. You do Erik Olson and understand the ''scientific'' side of perspective
2. You then move onto the ''Draw through, square as a unit'' method you'd learn from FZD, Scott or Watson Ernest

Mixing both, is how you turn the scientific into freehand intuition. Week 6 was not done by done any hardcore perspective, it was all freehand with a bit of Photoshop's shift lines

If you want a look into what you can achieve with this, then look at Krenz Works, Watson Ernest, Robert Watts, Syd Mead, Scott Robertson, Craig Mullins.. etc

Good luck, Anon I hope you are making some good progress

Pretty good. I have 2 perspective books and I was reading both of them at once while starting Vilppu's book, then his second part required me to rotate a cube like an animation sequence. I skimmed through both perspective books and found that neither of those books would teach me to animate a cube, even if they teach 3 point perspective. Seems to be a different skillset. I hope Huston teaches that but I've started Drawabox (just completed Ghosted Planes) instead since I found nothing else other than a cheat method using circles on Youtube.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It seems modern perspective books are a bit lame when it comes to moving you from just rules to applying it.
The only book that comes to my mind is ''Creative Perspective'' by W. Ernest, but its not exactly a book that'll give you want you want right away, and its going to ask you to do a lot reading through somewhat dry material, followed by 50 drawings of some boring stuff

The real answer here is that you should probably either do a bunch of boring perspective, or buy a cube shaped object irl and draw from it in all angles for a good while

> rotate a cube
just practice it - refer to the middle of this Krenz slide, you can ignore the bits about placing a figure inside the box. I think DaB's challenge is only good for learning how to approximate the convergence of lines accurately, it doesn't really help with visualizing forms turning in space - Vilppu is actually exceptional for this but still assumes a fundamental you should be able to draw a box.

> neither of those books would teach me to animate a cube
same thing with spheres and ellipsis, they just kind of assume you have grinded them somewhat and any deficiencies will improve as you continue. If you haven't grinded them then you should start.

It is coming together really nice!

On think I would suggest is that you pay attention the several independent light sources like the firefly and the windows at the left side. All of those light sources should be affecting their environments, the firefly's light should be reflecting from the grass and the door. The windows' light should be at least somewhat reflecting from the staircase and the roots. This is the harder part of painting/rendering when you have to deal with multiple different light sources all of which have their own reflections that all mix together.

The other part is that the shadows can show the imperfections of the area they are cast one, like how grass are randomly poking out here and there and the ground is not a perfectly flat surface but has bumps and holes randomly and again grass is sticking out in random directions.

I tried to show these ideas a bit. If you have questions ask.

Based on my reading of it (I dropped it)
It's good if you're a beg who thinks he can't draw and need to be motivated.
If you already hold to the propositions that she put forward... what good does it do to your artistry to read it? You can spend that time drawing instead. This reasoning is why, I think, people recommend simply do the exercises.

Also, there is some tedious stuff in there like creating a structure with cardboard or wood or some shit in order to train your seeing.
It's really annoying to go and have to try to do all that when I just want to draw. Loomis just tells me to get my pencil and start having fun (albeit not fun). I actually didn't know people trash on it and it sucks - I indepedently thought to myself... "Is this book actually trash? This just seems like a drawn out version of the stick" Then I went in the sticky and saw that they said to not read it and just do the exercises from it lol. Which made infinitely more sense to me. People saying it sucks and is a trap makes sense to me too. It sucks and is trash for someone already motivated to git gud.
Let's put two people in a room. One copies Bridgman, the other does whatever is in here. The Bridgmanner would have more gainz and the Right Sider would probably still be beg so maybe it is a trap.

There really aren't many issues to point out.

I think the placement of his right hand is a bit awkward. It appears like it's holding the book closer to his body than the other hand, therefore he would be reading diagonally.

Also, I get the impression that his right leg is slightly smaller that the left one.

Besides that, I think it's overall a competent drawing.

There is this thing called "c-o-m-p-o-s-i-t-i-o-n" it is a very useful topic to study a bit. If you are doing things like book covers or other complete artworks it is best if you sketch the whole thing together without details and find a good composition than adding it after you made the title character.

I know you said you constructed already but it seems like you aren't currently thinking of the tiger as a 3D object yet, instead of just areas of dark/light values.
A nice thing to also do, if you arent willing to measure the reference pic, is checking your angles in comparison to the reference image.
Good luck on your way!
(i know my quick pic isnt great, ear is kinda off and the angle on the muzzle is different too. but i hope it can convey what i mean by a 3D form)

If I'm understanding you correctly, the horizon of the book would be leaning to the right of the paper, no?
