6141306 No.6141306 [Reply] [Original]

The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Noir Caesar ( https://www.noircaesar.com/ )
> Focuses on black (specifically African-American) content, but seems willing to publish anyone good enough.
> Seemingly series-based only.
> No "magazine" style updates; series are updated on their own schedule.
> Seems less regular than Saturday AM, but also seems larger in terms of readership.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/submissions.php is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

>> No.6141308

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

Could also just be that, y'know, comics are really hard to get right in the first place. Plenty of actual manga are barebones generic shonen tropes, you just don't see 'em as much because 1. editorial filters the worst of them and 2. we only see the more interesting/most popular stuff being translated.

The most common error in crosshatching is not following the form, in the same way a painter must follow the curvature of the depicted object with their strokes. It may be good form to lay down contours before crosshatching. When in doubt; don't even bother and just use a bigger brush, assuming you're working digitally.

Observe how the hatching of the hands follows the contours - that is, the surface of the three dimensional shape. The lines on the fingers are perpendicular to the finger itself, "bumping" and thickening as they hit the knuckles. Without it, the shape would merely be implied from the silhouette of the finger. Scripts are just that, scripts. They do follow a minimum of required information, especially if you're not the one drawing them. Some people would just say "draw a half-page sized panel of a battle" and let the artists to their devices, Others are like Alan Moore and do stuff like picrel. Grant Morrison was the type of writer that would give you indications like the other one. An artist who worked with both said that readers believe Moore has everything figured out while Morrison is a very chaotic type of narrator, when in truth it's the opposite.

I'm sure the only difference between western and asian scripts is the language.

Might help if you do it like this:

>break each chapter down into brief synopsis
>expand on key points in the synopsis that progress the plot forward
>fill in a coherent script that would bring the characters to these points

If your characters are pretty fleshed out in your head already you can pretty much watch their interactions unfold independently as if watching an anime for the first time, but in your mind.
It's a pretty neat little trick.

Why write a VN instead of manga? Because there's less time-consuming artwork to do and each page will look better considering I don't have to draw so many in a short period of time.

A few reasons.
1) Nobody cares about comics. The stories aren’t good. The art isn’t good. The market is old or niche. They keep publishing crap for the sake of collectors or nostalgic boomers. Most media in America today is made by boomers for boomers. That goes doubly for capeshit. As a result, it’s lame.
2) if manga is what you love, why wouldn’t you make manga? Comics take a tremendous amount of time and effort. Why would you not make the kind that you actually like? They want to be the first good Western mangaka, not the last crappy Western comic artist.
3) The small amount of good stuff doesn’t get published. Western manga doesn’t even get published because the publishers aren’t interested in manga and manga readers aren’t interested in Westerners. Comics? Forget about it. Make some sort of progressive crusade comic or kitschy cape shit or else they’re not interested.

Well:

"WEBTOON is the #1 webcomics app in more than 60 countries with more than 55 million users monthly. The platform boasts more than 1 million titles from more than 500K creators telling their stories to over 15 million readers every day. "

This quote is taken from an article, but I verified this myself using stat tracking websites. Generally between 55-65 million people visit webtoon a month. But yes, mobile naturally beats out desktop readership. You don't have to adapt the webtoon format if you don't want, but it's not only convenient, it has advantages that are only possible with the vertical scrolling format in regard to timing/beats and other things.

I can't speak to discoverability except that the best rise to the top. My advice would be to any comic artist would be to never enter into the publishing domain unless you're making something with all your heart and soul. If you want to get noticed, you have to be pushing your limits to the max.

what's the current state of clip studio?
i'm still using an old pirated version when it was called manga studio.
when i compared it to a newer version of CSP i noted that CSP used more RAM. that was a year ago or so.

i'm making a manga and i'm more familiar with the old program, and it works great. but i've been wondering if i should upgrade and maybe even buy it properly. the thing holding me back the most is probably that i'd have to readjust everything.

Depends on the series/author. Some they just do some light toning (eg Seven Deadly Sins), others the author just does the storyboards and draws the main character and has a team of assistants to do everything else (Golgo 13).

Coloring is good but a little bit of anatomy practice can go a long way in making your artwork more appealing. For example for the talking guy, the left hand connects awkwardly to the wrist, and then the upper are is too short, and the fingers of the left arm are totally flat. Facial features are also a little lopsided which will become immediately obvious if you flip canvas. You don't have to grind these skills or something if you have a story going but maybe being a little bit aware of this can help.

I don't know what's happening in the middle panel of page 3, it appears as if he's drinking from a straw but that breaks continuity.
Gonna admit that I didn't look through all of it. But the paneling and general pacing could be improved by a lot. Page 2 alone could be compressed into 3 panels and Page 3 could be 3 panels as well. I'll post an example later but you should seriously think about page economy

Thanks for making the time to read a few pages and give me advices anon, i really appreciate it, and thanks you so much for remember me that the word that i was looking for was composition, i mostly posted the draft to know how i was going with the compositiong and the paneling, since i know that i have to improve the dialogue, but i feel that june was just yesterday and now we are on 11th day of july, so i got in panic for it

About the page economy, i just can say that this started as a 22 pages max, then i went over 50 and end up being 43 pages

About the pacing i need to know if it's to slow or too fast, that might change latter adding the right punctuation, but i have been reading it while i was trembling like a schizophrenic chihuahua, so i think that it's too fast
Also the panel in the page 3 was suposed to be a flashback to the night before, thanks for remind me that i didn't change that
Also thanks you for the edit effort, but i wanted to note that i'm doing this like a traditional manga format (start with the first page on the left, having the 2 pages spread and use the last panel to turn the page) so i don't know if i could aply it right away

the script is REALLY clunky.

"Have you been sleeping well at least?"
> are you getting enough sleep?

"people like you is the first one to die"
>people like you are the first ones to die.

"I want to take a walk, and see if I can find something happening. Is that or i won't be sleeping again tonight"
>I think im going to take a walk, see if i can find something going on, its that or another night of no sleep/

"i couldn't find nothing in the end"
>I couldnt find anything.

"i hate this world, it looks kinda empty, well i dont really hate it, but i cant stand to live on it, i wonder if this count, ever since i can remember, is always one thing or another, it doesn't matter where i'm, it doesnt matter where i look. theres always something weird happening around."

>I hate this world, it feels "empty(hollow?)", maybe hate is too strong, i can't stand living in it, ever since i remember, its always one thing or another, it doesnt matter where i am, there is always something off about it.

All of your dialogue is one big soliloquy, if thats the case it cant be shots on shots of the character thinking it, picture it as a narration over other scenes in a movie, maybe scenes of the main character observing the nature of his world,
there is ALOT of dialogue aswell. like a cumbersome amount, its a visual medium, show dont tell. pick out what is REALLY important to the narrative and trim the fat.

Thanks you for reading it, and you are totally right anon, i will improve the script, and also it's my fault for not adding dialogue boxes, so it's pretty simple confuse the dialogue and the narration(the more little dialogue isn't that important, just to be there besides the sfx that i will add latter)
I just overlooked to script to get out of the loop that i was, but i hope what i did write was enought to make the idea of how it should be, i was prioritizing the composition and the paneling so i could start drawing and finally get the things in order without make a drastical change in the pages and the order and those things

Also i wanted to make more a little bit more of narration to explaing a little bit how the mc actually feels so people could conect that with whats going on in the art, but i just don't know if they would overlap and make everything more convoluted
And i'm sorry that i'm so confusing and hard to understand, i'm simply have a mess in my head trying to do this, and thanks for the advice

NTA but maybe don't post an image just for flavour with every message if it's not necessary to help communicate something (like a visual example from a comic) since every thread has an image limit. /ic/ is a slow board and having to make a new thread before it's full just because this one hit image limit and nobody can post comic pages anymore would mean this one would get abandoned but stay haunting the catalog for a good while before it can finally get bumped off the board.
It risks people getting the active and inactive threads mixed up, not letting the inactive one die, and all sorts of board-worsening shenanigans you're probably not used to if you mainly browsed a faster board before this.

do you have your script written out in like a doc somewhere? I think it would be beneficial considering your english is really terrible, put it in a text doc, i'll proof read it and we can get it to at least a legible state.

I'd also combine all your pages into one image, so you can easily look over all of them, scrolling through the imgur link is tedious and doesn't help us help you with your composition. they are sketches so it doesnt need to be full size.

If you weren't thinking of visuals when you wrote the script then I don't know what to tell you other than do that next time and just make some up for now.

Unfortunately it can't really be broken down any further, this is the part where you're translating idea into visuals. This part is pure trial and error. Storyboard it, and if you don't like it then storyboard it again. There's a reason storyboards are typically drawn quick and loose: because it's quicker to do them over.

it sounds like you aren't conceptualizing your scenes enough. it isn't enough to have a general idea of a scene and dialogue. if there are specific visual elements that come to mind when a scene is thought up you need to sketch out that idea. even if you aren't straight up copy concept art like I do. (though it is highly resourceful)

I of course work very differently. I often do not go into a scene with finalized dialogue in mind. for chapter 12 I went in without final dialogue. I storyboarded when I wanted major dialogue moments, comebacks, big gut punch lines ect. and added what I needed later. If the ride to your best lines is boring or poorly directed no one will care anyway. if you want an example of a manga that did this. go read barrage by horikoshi. his shounen-style declaration panels were always weak because of this.

my point is, you need to focus on the visual elements and direction of a scene just as much as dialogue and the scenes story significance.

Depends what your definition of 'hardcore' is. 2 hours of immersion a day is easily enough to get to a decent level if you're doing it intensively over 2 or 3 years. If you're studying manga you're probably reading a lot of manga (or you should be at least), so just make it that you only read it in Japanese.

It's slow at first, but luckily various manga series being so long allows you to get pretty good at the specific terminology of that domain.

Also it depends on what your goals are I guess. If you think you're going to need to be talking to people a lot, then practice speaking a lot (don't fall for the 'no early output' meme). In that case, trying to memorise complex sci-fi terminology from something like Ajin would be a waste of time (compared to outputting on hellotalk or whatever).

t. Have ramped up my Japanese learning more and more over about a 3 year period. Started really small by doing RTK anki 5 - 10 minutes a day while on break from work, then moved up to sentence mining / intensive immersion maybe 30mins - 1 hour a day, and now I do 3 - 4 hours a day now that I'm getting into intermediate+. Now it's for the most part purely for enjoyment doesn't register in my brain as 'study'.

a majority of my time in the last 5 or so years has been spent on drawing. Only education or part time jobs ever slowed me down. multiple 12 hour work days in a row, lots of hyper fixating on projects. I don't like doing much else, and mostly rely on drawing to survive.

my family already has a history of arthritis at young ages, but my habits may have led to bad carpal tunnel or tendonitis. pain pills really help but I need to make sure I'm not doing permanent damage to my hands or pushing them too hard by numbing them with drugs.

It’s thick but not too much. I’d say the thickness would be similar to two pages of printer paper glued together.
The surface is smooth so it takes a bit of time to get used to.

If you ever buy this paper, be sure to get the B4 format, not the A4. Or else you’ll need to draw beyond the trimming lines like I do.

the problem is that I feel like I can't immerse. I have probably a 200-300+ book library that I plan to read through, many of them are classic sci-fi novels, and I'm also planning to find an animation job soon, so I can publish comics / graphic novels on the side until that takes off. I just feel like Japan no longer has a place in my plans, that I can already achieve anything I want to in America. Learning Japanese would just be a pleasurable hobby at that point, but I don't know if I can afford to do it while trying to kickstart my career. Maybe once I'm a pro, I'll have more time, but even then Boichi says it's very difficult just to survive the industry day to day

Sketched out some pages for a hentai manga I'm drawing, was hoping to finish the prelims in a day but guess I'm not that fast yet.

More than a few awkward panels, and idk about the pacing. It's porn but it feels a bit fast.
General plot is a hot monster girl getting railed by a pair of monster boys (boys are a couple).

Is this inspired by JJBA? Cause it feels like it.
>The writing
tonnes of typos, the first sentence has a typo--rulling instead of ruling--and the dialogue is generic, and at the sane time, feels like a shitpost.
>Paneling & Art
Every shoot is practically the same, face shots everywhere and not enough variation to make the poor composition interesting. The artwork isn't the worst but it's inconsistent. Especially the rats, I can identify the joke but it's just so bizarre that it almost makes me forget that this story has no plot >picrel
>The story (so far...)
We know nothing about these characters besides their quirky personality traits, we get a small line about a blue parrot and that's it. No exposition on why they're there. No actual substance. The first chapter shouldn't be like this, especially if you're aiming for a badass group of characters. Nothing about this makes me want to continue it.

I have done nothing these past few days, so that i could that care of my elbow, yesteday was worse, but now is way better, should i take a day or two more of rest, or i should get back to work tomorrow? Which one would be better? I also if i rest i want to re write the dialogue since the biggest faults of that, was re writting panel by panel to make it more cheerful to keep people interested on it, but the truth is that i'm good only writting depressing stuff, so i will go back to that

Are there any videos of a mangaka's process of making a whole chapter? I feel like we usually see a page, at best. I'd be interested to see how their storyboards start off, how they clean it up, and how much they leave to assistants. I suppose that's asking a lot, with how long people would have to tape, and how many angles.

Guys, is the scene readable? Or should I separate the columns more?

>> No.6168131

>>6168072
Had me a bit confused with the lines running between the bottom panels which looked kinda like arrows with the birds, I thought it might be zigzagging instead of running down at first and that both columns were showing the same scene, the right focused on the girl and the left on the guy. I thought the girl was UUOOOhing cause a bird landed on the mans shoulder and he barely responded like its an every day annoyance, but I take it they're seperate and she did that cause a bird went up her skirt?

>> No.6168136

>>6168131
yep.
so I need to make more clear they are separate scenes, got it. No birds flying between panels, maybe making the columns more separated between each other.

thank you!

Okay. I remember.
I think you should focus on an actual story. Your current comic lacks any kind of story and is more so a breakdown of a character. You can make the story simple, for example the main character isn't actually paranoid but is facing a real threat in his mind. You can have his friend be the one pulling the strings, making sure he never realizes the truth. Basic ideas like that can make your story in to a proper story.

My current comic I'm working on and off on has the simple plot of a loser main character wanting to prove that he is worthwhile.

Depressing stories are pretty popular and have their own audience from the happy stuff, so don't worry about trying to please anyone with what you want to convey. There's a lot of people who are more inclined to the tragic.
