I remember my high school art teacher once said "doing art is the closest thing to immortality"

Nope, doing math is. Art is dependent on cultural values, math is forever.

Math is not imbued with it's observer like art is with it's creator.

Hardy considers that point at the very end of the essay. His response is that the question is solely about immortality, not about the type of immortality (more personal vs less personal).

kek, I like Hardy, but with all due respect, the book should be called "A Mathematician's Cope"

Math is immortal because it never was alive in the first place. Math is not a celebration of life. It's its absence.

Wrong. Everything about our universe is expressed in mathematics. Even art is mathematical in nature.

That's true of grunt maths, things like accounting. The men on the cutting edge have warped later men's understanding of maths through their eccentricities and particular obsessions, men like Pythagoras and Euclid, Euler and Riemann. And while Pythagoras for example was a great eccentric, a philosopher, a cult leader, a musician and a bombastic suicide, what he is remembered for is his triangles, and if not for them the rest would have faded into obscurity by now.

Anyway, I prefer to think of maths as something solid and inert, like stone, while art is something that lives, nevermind most artistic media literally and inevitably decay on a short timescale while mathematical theorems are tamper-resistant. Immortality exists in stone, but stone is where dead men reside. Art is for the living.

Mathematics is not about creating anything new.

Art is ephermal and always vulguarized. The closest thing to immortality is immortality, the afterlife.

Jesus Christ, you faggots will do anything to avoid drawing. You're not immortal, this is your chance, go fucking draw.

math is a just a medium
and its expression arguably also falls under the umbrella term of art

mathematics is what defines "new," "old," existing or not existing, everything and nothing; it is literally the singular, indivisible factor of determining the value of reality and is a constant in any kind of universal, dimensional or informational configuration, the known, the unknown, all physics possible or impossible, are governed by the exact same mathematical structure that defines existence, non-existence, possibility, impossibility and probability
mathematics is older than this universe or any other possible universe, it is eternally constant and monolithic, it is its own entity, an all-powerful, perfect god, designed by itself

>Art is dependent on cultural values
only if you're a political normalfag
math exists specifically to be superseded by a completely new discovery that changes our understand of reality and renders the old perception obsolete
people will still be studying artists like Rembrandt and Leyendecker a thousand years from now
