IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead

Are there any good resources for learning how to lay down value for realism? I've pretty much just been using the Bargue linework poses / Drawing on the Right Side / Iten's Accuracy to practice getting proportions correct. I'm no longer /terrible/ at drawing what I see, but I'm still awful at shading complex stuff like the face, and I don't have a process for slowing down and being systematic or using my time productively.

Some figure drawings today with a few process(?) studies on the right. I feel like I could benefit a lot and have something worth showing off if I took the jump and worked on a figure for 1 hour or so, but it feels daunting since I know I have large holes in my knowledge still.
Perhaps collecting some more "simpler" completed works can give me an idea on what to strive for.

>>5251150
You should try painting perhaps. Make some nice-looking loose sketches and then render to completion afterwards, effectively relying less on clean and crisp lines to carry the complete piece. You can keep working on good linework on the side as well. God-tier linework feels like something that takes the most mastery compared to the other skills, so it's more of a patience and time thing.
Not that I have much experience here, mind, but I've been thinking about moving into more refined drawings as well.

I draw loose and sketchy construction, and then actively go for good linework when drawing over that construction. In a way it gives me an outlet for that bad habit, so I don't fall into it where it really counts.
As I see it, with construction, anything goes as long as it works. Think of it like scaffolding. It's not part of the final product and doesn't have to be pretty.

You should just start copying a bunch of anime bitches. On the side you work on construction, anatomy, and gesture.
Go ahead and pick from the beg resources like: Vilppu, Famous artist course, Hampton, Loomis, Huston, Etc.

I'd recommend famous artist course first but if it doesn't vibe with you just pick something else. At least read the anatomy section of it so you'd have a clear idea of how you would incorporate anatomy into construction.
I encourage you to read or atleast go to the sections that catches your eye out of these resources and if you like em try them out. Stick with it until you run into a bump where the instructor goes over something you don't get. Because in other books it could be explained in a different way that makes the most sense to you like drawing legs.

Get some anatomy books as well like Stonehouse, Atlas of human anatomy, Goldfinger, or human anatomy for the artist.
I am beg so maybe my advice won't help you but i'll still give you it because figure drawing is something i'm working on

for example, doing it on >>5251402, that lady's right thigh is about three forearms long. To copy it, I'd then need to measure how long the forearm is on my own drawing with the same method, measure three of what that one is and that's how long the leg should be on my end.

Having no experience is a benefit in the sense that you can focus 100% on what the teachers are telling you without your "style" getting in the way, it'll allow you to learn a lot faster without having to first unlearn bad habits.
Go through the /ic/ sticky and don't skip steps, read the recommended reading and do the exercises, I recommend you really drill down the concept of 3D construction because it makes drawing anything massively easier.

I'm a Hunter x Hunter fan, so based taste. Your Killua is just a copy from a frame of the show, so I feel like while Gon is more off model, its still a better start. Learning anime isnt just being able to draw copies of frames from the show though, reminds me of when I was in middle school I used to trace frames from the Naruto anime then shade them in with pencil and I even tricked myself into thinking I could draw Naruto.

When you're drawing anything the best thing to ingrain into your head is construction, learn how to construct a head and body with lines so that you can draw any character and any pose whenever you want. When youve started to learn that then youre at level 0 and have started to learn to draw properly.
Good luck, go to artbook thread and check the beginner essentials.

Basic Figure Drawing (Huston, Vilppu) - learning gesture, construction, and 3D forms.
Perspective (How to Draw, Dynamic Sketching, Perspective Made Easy) - further understanding of 3D forms
Intermediate Figure Drawing (Huston, Vilppu, Hampton, Loomis)

Choices of color are definitely better, I would've gone for a brown for the staff and the twine but it's fine. Mute your background colors a bit, make it less saturated and darker so the character stands out. The linework and some of the coloring could do with a cleanup, look around the edges of the character. You could do another linework layer and try some clean looking lines, it's a long process though, I suggest using long quick strokes, keeping the sketch layer in the back to see if you're doing them in the right places. Usually difficult to get the strokes right first time with the lines but keep undoing and trying again in future.
When you've done that just pick a light source, by the looks of the eyes and the background it looks like you could have a main light source from the left and then backlight the drawing if you're intending on keeping the background kinda bright.
It's getting better, might be good to finish this one within a week, look over at what you can improve and do another drawing and experiment with some more stuff. Usually good to check other artists who've drawn similar things and absorb all their techniques you like assuming they all work with the drawing you're doing and see how they approach it.
With anime, I'd advise against using shots from the anime itself as they're always going to be flat color, use them just for character reference, gelbooru is good to reference for a huge dump of anime art.
Godspeed

Thanks for the replies. I figured that I bit more than I could chew and will go and draw some basic blocky shapes instead and only after that, gradually progress to more complex figure drawings, otherwise I will never learn the fundamentals and proportions which could hamper me in the future.

Tried to draw a face and used a reference this time. But it's been super difficult to eyeball stuff and weren't it for hair, It would probably look even worse than now as I wouldn't know how to properly anchor it to empty face so I guess there is a month or two of fundamentals, blocky shapes and everything made out of cubes for me.

>Just draw
>Self-critique
>Choose one thing to improve
>Do studies read books etc.
>So on...

That is what people mean by just draw. You should only be following courses or books to completion if they help you complete one cycle of your feedback loop.

For me, I like to produce 1 or 2 complete drawings a week with at least 30 minute fundie practice daily. The 30 minutes changes depending on what I'm drawing for those pieces.

this is why people say "just draw", youre all so concerned with this meme of planning out a rigid course that only realistically works for like 5% of people, so you spend all this time planning and plotting and hoarding info and than go back to playing overwatch or whatever. There isnt some miracle one size fits all course, the people who go to art school are the kind of people who would go to art school so its self-selective for those who thrive in rigid environments (which is a minority of artists), you need to let yourself express your strengths and expose your weaknesses and the only way to do that is to draw and find out, and then focus on the problem area. People who draw constantly are aware of their flaws because they can just compare their art to other people's and see what is lacking (inb4 cherrypicked lack of progress image by someone with genuine autistm). If you're a /beg/ who has trouble seeing your own issues then the solution is to....draw, since you need to work on fundamentals like hand and eye training which can only be learned through experience and muscle memory.
Lessons are only really valuable for medium to high level /ints/ who have plateau'd and even then they still draw constantly to get to and MAINTAIN that level.

This is valuable and true advice so no tldr;

The first and most fundamental thing you should learn is line control by drawing with your shoulder (drawabox lesson 1), then you should do a mix of each fundamental skill which are observation, construction, perspective, anatomy and gesture, each of these things build off each other and there's no specific path you should follow, in fact it's probably better to do all of them together so you get a wider perspective.
Learning more specific things in between is fine, just don't get caught up in doing things "your way" before having a solid grasp of the fundies.
Don't fall for the eternal fundies grind trap either because repeating things over and over is not an effective way of learning, you need to be self-critical and patient with every study, if you feel like you are not learning anything then move on to something else.

The sticky document lays it out pretty well, don't skip steps you might think are irrelevant like observational drawing because they will teach you a lot for any kind of art you might want to do.

So I figured I'd attempt some rough application of the very basics I've learned so far in FwaP and I'm kind of glad I did.
This is trash, I know, but from it I learned the importance of cutting off the sides of the circle that Loomis teaches later on.
The reason I'm posting this is to point out that it's good to try to bite off a little more than you can chew when you're just doodling or trying things out. Don't be afraid of making even hopeless attempts in your off-time. By doing things wrong and examining them, you'll actually start learning things yourself. That's something you cannot do while doing nothing at all.
Originally I was only going to post work that I personally could find no flaw in, but since this seemed to teach me a lesson, I figured I'd share it.

Nothing's stopping you from learning to draw digitally right now. I learn doing both trad and digital because there's no reason not to.
As for coloring, that's a ballgame I haven't learned yet. My personal plan was to take up coloring after mastering the fundies and get some legit work in.
As for that pic, the head isn't too bad, but the eyes seem a bit off, though I can't quite place why and I could be wrong.
The hair detailing looks nice; very confident linework especially on the leftmost side, which I have to say is beautiful. In fact I'd say you have reasonably good linework in general. Mine's still a mess, but I"m working on it.

I'm planning to do this my whole life, anon. A few years is nothing.
I want fundamentals to be my absolute top priority, and to be fair lighting and shading is a part of that, and those will help me color in the long run.
That said, sure, I'll take some coloring lessons after I'm done with about three other lesson plans I have on my calendar (and of course this doesn't mean I won't take cracks at coloring for fun in the meantime).

That just means you're making progress.
The thing is, your eye isn't really trained at consciously judging distance. By training your eye through action, it's actually starting to get more and more used to it.
As time goes by your studies will get less and less skewed, until it's no longer discernible, and eventually is no longer there at all.

The best way to learn realistic value is working from life. If you want to master landscapes, you have to go out and some point and do a lot of plein air. Otherwise you're just recreating values a photographer decided on with his camera, and post processing.
If you want to draw realistic values for the human form, you have to study the human form in person, at some point.

Good attempts.

-Learn to draw hair, the scribbling you're doing is a cop out. Hair has texture and form. Define the darkest parts, the midtones, and the highlights, with a proper contour, and you're half the way there. The only correct attempt you made is the lower edges of the upper right figure. Eyebrows are not black scribbles, they're hair, and they have a grain, shape, and slight volume.
- You need work on your line quality. You go from too faint to too dark, and you're not making pleasing lines - you're also working too small, so the pencil lines fight for attention with the form.
-Your eyes need a lot of work, you're still in symbol land.
- Mouths are not drawn as an outline, that's symbol drawing. You're following the contours of shapes, and your line choices are important - one of the more difficult things for beginners to learn is what to draw, and what not to draw, but that choice making, especially in line drawings, is important as a process to learn - like, draw the shape of the lips, but let them grow smaller towards the edges of the mouth - and then add more lines if they have creases there.
For /beg, not bad. But you have a lot of things to learn, and you should start paying attention to things like line confidence before it becomes an ingrained habit.

You're still symbol drawing. You're still placing random lines hoping they're right, which is bog common in beginners. You're drawing eye "shapes" without actually capturing the form of eyes, or the lids, lashes, and properly placing the pupils. You're drawing "eyebrow shapes" without looking at them, and seeing they're hair, with grain (direction the hair grows) and a shape based on that. You're drawing a "mouth shape" instead of the forms. Your nose is all off, because you haven't look at the nose as a collection of forms, especially under the tip where it goes into the philtrum (upper lip) . The brow is all off, because you dodn't establish landmarks and measure the placement of the shapes of the face.
And, you're scribble shading. Don't do that.
Not a horrible attempt, but the standard response here is warranted:
LOOK at what you're drawing.
LEARN to measure proportions and placement
LOOK for pleasing lines, and accurate lines. Like a teach told us in beginning drawing course, every time you put pencil to paper, it should be to make a specific, purposeful line. Making mistakes and correcting them is how you get there.
Stick with contours for now. Shading is just putting more errors on top of errors. Start over, and establish the outside contour of the face, and then establish landmarks correctly, measuring for them. Look at how each part of the face is shaped, and learn to capture it correctly, then put them all together, measuring for proportions, into a final drawing.
When you can draw a face fairly accurately with lines, then you are ready to start shading.

And, you're doing too much. Most gesture is done in classes as a warm up. Gesture is over-emphasized here, and isn't something you need to grind on for 6 hours, and shouldn't be as fully defined as these, they can be stick figures at best.

Do some cloud and landscape study. Clouds don't look like that. Jumping into finished compositions requires more work to build environments, perspective, lighting, and creating the illusion of depth. Your composition is pretty static, there's no flow, it's a grid, basically. There's nothing to lead the eye to the focal point, you're not giving mush info for the viewer as to environment other than a flat plane of blue, and a brown lump which we have to make up an answer of what it is. Composition is a lot of things, and narrative is one big one - why are we looking at this character. What are they doing? Why are they there? These are the questions you have to answer with the piece, before jumping into building the environment out, making it visually appealing, and things like color composition.

Example: If you open MS paint and select the "marker" tool under the paintbrush, it's not completely opaque. In Photoshop by default the line will maintain its opacity no matter how many times you go over it, unless you lift the pen and put it back down.
