Oh yeah, I forgot to say, there's about a 10 year difference between these, but it's actually more like a 4 year difference.

Left was "the" first ever image I posted to /ic/ around 2010, and I got fucking slapped for it. I got slapped so hard that, unused to criticism or critique, I got salty mad and stopped drawing for approx. 6 years. I started again in 2016.

hey thanks for the compliment! it's hard to pick one but i would probably say perspective comes out on top by just a hair for me. once i dove deep into perspective and truly understood forms on an intuitive level, the suggestions with line-weight or any other technique just emerged naturally. it takes practice to get better at any technique, of course, but perspective seems to guide a lot of my progress

The entire process is still a struggle and I still have glaring issues with things I practice daily, I wish I had more time to draw but my workplace is killing me. Hopefully this year I can finally learn how to render but even so my most basic fundamentals are still shit and I still need to improve on basically everything.

lul I don't think I can come up with a name for you that you'd ever be satisfied with. If you want it to feel personal, it'll probably have to come from you.

If you don't want to go with a single word username since hard to secure and often immemorable, a double-barrelled username of two words mashed together is usually the way to go. I think the trick to a memorable username is abusing alliteration or having vowels in close proximity to another, stuff like:

milk-infamous
gunner-nun
Astrofine
Alkafang
MalMiss
mal-maw
EroBun
ortamaw
Etc. etc.

So maybe try to lower your expectations or something? Set achievable goals? Focus on the process? Honestly this reply makes it sound like you’ve already given up internally and are looking for excuses, while still putting on a tough „never surrender” face to the outside world. I am NOT kidding when I say that you would have a much easier time if you fixed your psychological issues first - anxiety literally clogs up your brain, slowing down your progress and taking away from your focus significantly. Also you’re wrong on all three accounts in your post. If your expectations really are rock bottom, then why aren’t you feeling the least bit more satisfied with your work? Stepping out of your comfort zone and setting achievable goals is not mutually exclusive, you have things mixed up. And focusing on the process does not equal instinctive thinking - drawing is a mental activity, you constantly make decisions whether conscious or not, and for that you need focus.

Honestly if I were you, I would just completely reset my approach to drawing - you seem to have it too tangled up to untangle bit by bit. Get yourself a good beginner book like Keys to Drawing - if you’ve already read it then read it again, but this time even more slowly and carefully, doing all the exercises just as he explains them. Read it as if you don’t know ANYthing about drawing and your sole goal is to learn to make neat, mundane drawings from reference. Now this is what an achievable goal looks like!

I think it's just been mileage in figure drawing to be honest. When working on this I just thought to myself that things further from the camera should be smaller and then exaggerated the differences between the big and small parts for a more extreme perspective. A few grid lines is all you should need to see where everything lines up. As far as what I learned from, it's mainly been Feng Zhu videos on sketching and thumbnailing. If I can help any other way, let me know.

I think doing master studies have been extremely helpful for me. Copying old master drawings of Michelangelo or Tiepolo really gives you a good sense of how they solved/hatched different form and light scenarios. The crux is that by copying, I mean meticulously drawing every single stroke exactly the way it is, no shortcuts, trying to get as close to the original as possible.
It has been my experience that after doing a study like that for several hours, when you then go back to your own stuff, even if you haven't been exactly conscious of what characterized the hatching technique you were just copying, some of it will invariably have bled into your own technique by osmosis or something.
I guess it doesn't have to be just old masters, just anyone whose hatching style you admire and want to imitate.

I also think picking the right references to work from is important, i.e. picking ones with a single light source will give you that simple highlight->halftone->core-shadow->reflected-light pattern that once you solve the problem of how to hatch it once, you can basically apply it anywhere in whatever you are drawing.

I had to reset my own drawing progress after a year of almost no improvement, because of /ic/'s terrible advice, so I can speak on this front with experience.

To reset, I had to start slowly.
I used a Pomodoro and only drew from 10PM - 12AM.
I would draw for 10 minutes and take a 5 minute break each time.
This may seem strange to people who have always been drawing but that's how us beginners need to reset if we're still complete trash even after trying our best for almost a year by binging video courses and grinding studies.

When doing this, feelings of great frustration will come upon you. Acknowledge it but do not let it control your decisionmaking. Decide that you want to draw and that no feeling will change this goal.

Speaking of goals, you need one. This will get your mind off of how much you suck and put it on things you need to do for that day.

One thing I did was turn my nasty basement into a drawing room. I put up a curtain to block the view from all the shit there and setup a table. Because it's a place away from my room, I am able to associate it with working rather than sleeping and masturbating.

And on that note, actually try to do NoFap if you can. When I say doing NoFap, I just mean not to Fap, I dont meant to go on the cringey ass Reddit.

There's far more than just this that I have done but these are the few changes that I have made that caused me to actually enjoy drawing now even though I know I'm bad at it. Now it's fun.
Maybe it's because I dont listen to /ic/ for advice anymore but I think it's a combination of the things I mentioned and the things I dont have room to mention.

When you draw, observe the proportions and find things that lineup so that way when you draw it from imagination later you can be more accurate. Because everyone has different paces they learn. If you draw for 30 minutes every Saturday for a year, you’re going to have far less progress than someone who drew every day for an hour for a year.
