If people want feedback on wips and studies I imagine they could ask for help in the Dadcord or the threads, and I feel for some people having half-finished work or practice displayed could be embarassing.

No, that's not what I meant. A lot of people will often ask for crits without giving any directions. More often than not, no one has any idea of what you're trying to do or what exactly you want help with.
Since it's your drawing you should tell people what you're missing and what you're seeking help for.

Otherwise expect to get a "yeah, that blue hue is a bit desaturated" or "perhaps move the elbow up a bit". Not the msot helpful or insightful advice.

You're thinking it's as simple as that. But what you may think it's a flaw or something that's off might easily be something the person is aware of and is thinking of fixing after the deal with the main problem they're facing.
Not to mention often the need for crit does not lay on the potential flaws of it but in asking people if the image conveys what the author is looking for.

Just posting something and saying "crit please" doesn't work. You don't have to believe me, just try it and see what happens. If you're lucky, you'll get something useful, but most times people will either ignore it because they just don't know what you want, point out really obvious things or at worse, waste a lot of time telling you what you already know.

It's observable that those who get the best and most useful critiques are those who take their time to explain what they're expecting out of a critique.

So, I'm trying to follow this tutorial. I had a bit of an issue getting the line art out of the tutorial for practice, but here's my result


I feel like my airbrush was off, as if I took the color given i nthe tutorial, it looked really yellow, and not like the tutorial result at all, so I went for a lighter colour
I'm also not quite sure what I was supposed to erase before the higlights step
I assume I put the flattened dupe from the third last step at the top, blur it, set the layer type to overlay or hard light, then take my original non-duped layer, put them in a folder, adn flip the gaussian layer to that folder? What am I supposed to screen for the last step?
Any ideas or feedback would be greatly appreciated

oh, if you want my lines for this sort of thing, you can just ask, although i suppose it's a little late. https://i.imgur.com/UCHw5zF.png otherwise, if you select everything and delete the grey, it might help if you then raise the contrast and set it to multiply on top so there are fewer fragments.

colours:
- the airbrush colour is really yellow, but it's fine if you screen it. it's also probably fine if you use a lighter colour and just adjust screen opacity depending on how highlighted you want the area to be. actually, i compared it to the original afterwards and it probably could've used a little more highlighting, but it was okay enough for me to not bother.
- before the highlights step, i chose to select & erase (with a brush) inside the selection from the previous screen layer, because i felt that there was too much glow in certain areas (mostly just above the tits, iirc?). it was just to adjust how much there was, basically.

as for the last few steps, it's just some post-processing/convenient filtering. mostly i do it because it looks nicer, and here i did some extra to help match the source more.
i didn't clip the gaussian layer to the original folder, i just set it to overlay/soft light and put it on top. then i filled the screen with adjustment colours and clipped it to the unmerged drawing folder for lazy adjustments.

By selecting everything, I'm assuming you mean like auto-selecting everything inside (and outside) the lineart then erasing? This is imo the worst part of my colouring.

I always have this problem with filling my lineart, I tend to get "jaggies" around the lines because of the anti-aliasing. I suppose going forward I should select the areas and expand the selection by 1px?

Ah yeah, setting it to screen really does unyellow it a bunch. You didn't say in your tutorial, but I'm assuming you used a hard airbrush? How do you determine the colour to use for airbrushing the highlights/lighter parts, if turning it to screen changes it so much?

I get you didn't clip the guassian blur, alright. By "fill the screen" You mean you made an entirely new layer, and put it below the guassian? In the pic "the last screen layer" is the layer you just made with adjustment colours?

yes, but that's why you start with small project. Dont tackle big project like GMI in one year or learning anatomy within a month. Break it into chunk, one week for arm one week for leg, the same apply to color theory and such. The problem is that you have too many option while at the same time too far to reach that's why it feels like you'll never catch up. That's ok, life be that way because I've been there and I'm still on the same path of struggle. Think hard, about what you really want to do, then get there one step a time.\

I think that what >>5165270 said is pretty solid. Something that can also help you is to communicate what your idea/goal is with what you're sharing.

I'll give you an example, imagine that you're studying a character and you're especially focused in character design and you make three quick sketches and add a couple values that are just there for the sake of helping you see a couple items better (say the character itself, clothing and accesories). Then you post it without saying anything.
Someone could easily write a few paragraphs and share some stuff about anatomy because a couple proportions might have slipped. And someone else then do the same about using values, and telling you how to translate this to color later on, etc.

In the end you only really cared about the overall design, and the elements you included and how the character read. But people went with their interpretation of what they'd look at because they don't know what you're doing. At best you can write this down for later and continue on your own. Or at worst, get distracted from your goal chasing stuff that other people saw but that wasn't important to you in the begging.

So, let's say that you are painting something and care particularly about the composition. Then explain briefly what your goal is, and what you're paying attention to now and what you're disregarding currently. This way you'll get a reply that's valuable for you and will not distract you with someone talking about colors, how you painted this or that, and so on.

You can extrapolate this to whichever other subject. But I hope it will help you get some good crits. It's fine if you don't agree with my thoughts from before. I'm jsut recommending this after seeing people not get the critique they were looking for or get no crits at all.

by selecting everything, i mean i ctrl-clicked the layer with the highlight and then shrunk the selection, erased some parts, and then blurred it. like i said, you can just do it with an eraser regularly too, but i did it that way to make it convenient to erase chunks without really minding the lines so much

if you're colouring your lineart in CSP, it's convenient to set your line layer to selection source, set selection wand to +area >1-4 px, and then select outside the lineart object and invert your selection. there are bucket tools that fill within too and erasers that erase outside lines. inverting can be more convenient than selecting inside if you do semi-transparent lines, or if you use textured pens.
expanding can work sometimes. otherwise, try filling in a base by wand + hand (for touchups) and then clipping all other shading to that. it's convenient

i think i used an airbrush set to 90-100% opacity? it probably doesn't matter that much since you blend it out, though. as for the highlights, if i'm using a screen layer i'll do it with screen on, so determining colour isn't an issue. i just put the colour there to make it easy to replicate.

yeah, that's right. again, i did that because i noticed my shading ended up somewhat more intense than the original.
