Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Real people make me sick, even looking at real life pictures makes me uncomfortable and depresses me to the core. I'd like to think there are people who truly get what I mean around here.

For that reason I feel like it's not possible for me to learn how to truly paint (as in https://boards.4chan.org/ic/thread/5034220)) because my favorite references are either not from life or stylized/anime, which means there's inherently a focus on lines, shapes and structure.
A random artist working off 3DPD pinterest pictures will always have an edge on me because they'll be fed a lightsource and be able to see how light affects all areas of the drawing, whereas I'll be left having to invent one and paint in some kind of low key stylized way.

This was poorly written but it's because I'm still trying to find a process for myself. Thanks for reading. Give me your best.

Hello, I consider these my best drawings, what level would you place me at?
Mid /beg/?

What should I do to improve?
I'm focusing on improving my coloring and perspective now.

I learnt all the muscles and bones from the book, anatomy for sculptors. Now it's just a matter of not messing up when I do my anatomy when I draw.

I've read through anatomy for sculpters, fun with a pencil, figure drawing for all it's worth, perspective made easy, and figure drawing and invention.

This is the video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Xu3XwEYClc&list=PLlZ4N2OWHomvpm4g9dExqjTf2xy1wWYYM&index=8
I started implementing contrapposto and drawing what I see. Am I meant to not copy poses exaclty?
Do I add more gesture to a pose than what I see?
Do you know any good videos about gesture?
I just copied the proko tutorial on it.

It is better to push and exaggerate the poses more than what you see. You will likely to stiffen up your figures the more you construct them anyway.
I don't watch much videos about gesture so I can't reccomend, but I like Vilppu approach, you don't have to study from him if you don't like, because gesture is a rather personnal and intuitive subject, it varies from person to person, as you practice gesture you will likely develop the most natural method to you.

Your linework is /int/ but your colours and values are /beg/. Work on these. And fixing your hands and clothing folds will go a long way to making it look snappier.

Easiest way to fix colours is to study from anime artists that have great colouration. I also recommend speedreading gurney's light and colour when you start drawing backgrounds, it should only take like 2 hours if you read super fast and take a few notes on important things. Easiest way to fix values is to understand how to break things down into values which is covered wonderfully in the Craig Mullins' schoolism course. If you're short on time you can watch only the values part and ignore the rest.

I've never heard that referencing other artist's work is a bad thing.
I did a similar style to his and I did reference him I admit that but I didn't out right copy his art style, his has many tones of shading and has more lighting angles coming from all sorts of directions and he doesn't use colored lights like I did, his eyes are also very different from mine and he does his hair differently.

Just because it's similar doesn't mean I outright copied his style.

You want to know what really gave it way? It was the lips, it's one of his unique traits that you may either recognize it belongs to him or a discounted clone version which is what you're trying to become. Stop making up excuses and admit the reason why people are telling you about how your figures especially the faces do not look organic is because you heavily rely on referencing and don't know the how and why behind the stylized forms and where they originate from.

I don't see the problem with this.
I really do not.
I'm not tracing.

I used to make up my own shit and that looked weird so I stopped that, people even on /ic/ told me here to just copy other artists since I sucked so fucking much, and I still do.

I liked how he does realistic rendering so I followed what he did and did things similar to him, mainly the rendering on the body including the lips. I didn't go too much into rendering like him, though and yes I 100% admit that. I don't know what you want from me. I never said that I didn't reference his art not once..

Are you tell me not to copy and reference things that other better artists do and put them into my work? I hear people tell me to always copy others better than you. Kienan Lafferty made a video showing how he literally steals shit of off others despite being as good as he is and he encouraged me and others to do the same thing. Copying rendering, styles, effects and so on.
Are you telling me that they're all fucking wrong? There's tons of videos just like it.

If you honestly are telling me something else, and I'm just going off on a tangent, I'm really sorry but I genuinely do not understand what you are trying to incriminate me for.

I'm not a skilled artist that can make up unique stuff on the go, in fact I fucking suck at it, I don't know what looks good. Instead, I take inspiration, copy and make my own stuff using other better artist's works.

Isn't that what I'm supposed to do?
I have no style at all, so I copy and reference others.

yeah it's gigabeg tier, you are disregarding the mass of every form to fit your symbol drawing this is literally drawing what you think how it looks like rather than thinking how it ''should'' look like, the arms aside from looking like ribbon bands are bended in front view(left) which is impossible unless she has an arm like this( blue), her chin is over his shoulder.... if you take that the dude is not bending over and shes not even completely at his side she must have a fucking long neck to cover that gap between their bodies. All of this looks really unatural and stiff not to mention the horrendous anatomical mistakes... yikes.

gonna be honest i don't think learning the individual muscles to that degree of precision is actually necessary or beneficial at this level, when you clearly can't draw the overall shapes/forms. that or you're just doing it very inefficiently.
here fpr example, top left, you are clearly still symbol drawing the neck and surrounding area, and even if you have the muscle groups laid out - what does it matter if you know how to chunk it but dont know how to draw the shapes?

you have the muscles memorised. ok, great. but does that even apply when you draw things? some of the legs have clodhopper feet with ankles as wide as the calves. iguess its also an issue of bad stylisation. and learning attractive stylisation is probably less of an issue of learning every muscle group.

idk, dude. i know thats kind of vague and id like to be able to help more, but i just dont really understand how you go through this many anatomy studies without applying it.

have you put time into learning stylised anatomy? realism and complex musculature and whatever dont get translated in a 1:1 ratio.

you dont learn from anime even though youre...in the asg? and probably want to draw in a weeby style ? what

while learning realistic proportions is useful i think you do have to learn how to stylise because for example look at the drawing above. i cant tell if youre anime for regular anime or more loli-head size but either way you have to size the limbs appropriately, not just blow up the head size and call it a day yknow?

okay, if you try to copy real life, do you have any realism drawings that i can see? original/non study ideally, but studies work too. also how long have you been drawing for

also yeah look at other artists and understand and copy and take what you like, i dont know if theres a reccd book or guide although i guess you could follow individual artists 'how to draw' tutorials lmao

Yeah well you did not learn anything at all.
You are supposed to be good at copying without even having a proper understanding of anatomy.
If you want to get better at drawing Anime, copy a bunch of it to get a grasp of its line design, line quality
and basic shapes. If you want to get better at drawing faces overall (not just anime faces), study the whole head anatomy.

Don't follow guides to end up copying basic flat shit.
You are just a beginner so focus on being able to copy as accurate as possible from anime/manga first.
After you have done a fair amount of successful copies; switch to perspective, then to gesture and anatomy.
After following a proper study plan you will be able to combine what you learned and craft a proper illustration.

Take a proper look at the copy you posted: you drew spikes where there shouldn't be, the same with curves and
you didn't consider the spacing at all. Without mentioning that you don't understand form and proportions at all.
Don't make half-assed copies, make proper copies; otherwise you won't learn anything.

You kinda have to watch other videos in the series for context though

I had to reverse engineer the perspective from the image. This is not the proper way to do it, you should plan the perspective beforehand

I approximated where your leftvp and rightvp was, giving me the horizon line. the centre of the COV is expected to lie somewhere along that horizon line (since it's 2pt). but I assumed that the centre of COV is along the midline of the image frame.

At this stage, the size of COV is still undefined, only its centre is defined. but the leftvp, rightvp and centre of COV allows us to triangulate the Stationpoint; the stationpoint is somewhere vertically below the centre of COV, and there is a 90deg relationship between the leftvp and rightvp at the stationpoint. (this relationship is covered in 2point video)

once the stationpoint is established, you can draw 2 lines offset 30deg on both sides of the vertical. where those lines meet the horizonline is where the COV intersects. then draw a circle that intersects both points. (this part is covered in the start of the 1pt video)
(1/2)

>> No.5076355

>>5076348
>>5076131
(2/2)

A proper order to make your image is to plan perspective beforehand
>establish dimensions of image
>establish horizonline in image
>overlay a circle ontop, the centre of the circle should be on the horizonline and ideally midline of image frame. This will be your cone of vision, size it so it covers most of the image, not necessarily all (you can leave corners slightly distorted like >>5067883).
>using the points where the circle intersects with the horizonline and knowing that the stationpoint is directly vertical from the centre of vision, you can
find the stationpoint (reverse of the videos)
>in 2 point, you pick an arbitrary first vanishing point (left or right)
>then find the complementing 90 degree vanishing point by taking a right angle along the line between stationpoint and first vanishing point (as in 2pt video)

When the horizon line is high in the image like in >>5067632, it also brings the COV up, leaving a lot of image distorted outside COV.
You can solve this, by
>making COV larger by moving the stationpoint further down and vanishing points further apart
>or move image so it fits better in COV, i.e. move the horizonline down with respect to image, which is what I did >>5067883
>or change to a 3 point perspective, where COV is not fixed on the horizonline, COV can move up or down (covered in the other videos in the series)
