I've been tracking League's art for a while, since many new artist are aiming for this quality.

I totally agree the new ones definitely look a bit bland, considering how much outsourcing they're doing right now and the shift of shitting out as many skin as possible

My problem with League, Riot, WoW art is that it's trying to look like League, Riot, WoW art. It borrows so much from itself that it becomes incestuous and ceases to suggest anything grounded or relatable. Look at the armor there. What's it made of? Toys? Plastic? The skin is painted the same as the armor, so is the skin made of toys, plastic?
It's the same with much golden age illustration. Besides standouts like Whitmore and McGinnis, most of it's commercialized trash, well rendered trash but in the end won't let you forget, even momentarily, it's a magazine ad or pulp cover.
The thing is, when you express this opinion, people can't even fathom it. They think you're being a salty bitch. How can you not admire such skill?
If you believe the point of art is purely to flex and confound begs, then I suppose you have to. But I can't force myself to care or remember or be inspired by this assembly line shit.
