IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve your technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice.

Hey anons, are there any tips for sketching? I feel like in most of the more dynamic or perspective drawings I can't understand the process behind making them, and I kinda overall struggle with sketching, usually skipping ahead and then having to redraw things when I'm already rendering them.

I understand the whole principle behind why its bad to start to learn to draw by drawing anime. Anime is a stylized portrayal of reality, and its important to have an understand of how to draw something "realistically" before you go in and stylized it, or else you have no basis in reality. Literally.
But at what point would you say you can detach from this beginning (learning the basics, fundamentals, etc) and progress to a different style? How do you find out what your "style" is? Draw with minimal or no reference? or is there some trick. I dont think Im at the point to experiment yet, but im curious

Find artists you like, look through their art and decide what exactly they do that you like, and practice that thing. Just for an example, pic related is an old sketchbook page from 2016. I really like the semi-realistic anime faces that the artist of Virgins' Empire does, so I did some tracing, analyzed the proportions and shapes he uses, then did a bunch of drawings from reference without tracing, then tried to integrate it into my own drawings.

I’ve been grinding fundies to draw manga style better basically.

How do you measure proportions in perspective intuitively? I feel like actually using a ruler to measure an arm at a certain angle is way too mathematical and I won’t really learn much from it.

Is it just a matter of drawing it so many times that you intuitively know what it should look like? Another reason I feel actually measuring would be a waste is that every person’s arms is slightly different based on body fat, muscle, and height.

The only fundies I’ve been focusing on are gesture and perspective, how do you know when you’re ready to move on to stuff like construction with boxes and anatomy?

As long as you can learn something useful from it, do it. Sure they were made by 3d artists so proportions, pose, etc can be imperfect. But at least they are stylised so it can at least stimulate your visual library. Also they aren't as boring as grinding models that become tasteless and boring really fast if you only train with that.
And most important they are 3d models. So perfect perspective. And you can rotate them however you want unlike pictures.

Torso too long. Don't make shadows like that. For a shadow to be that sharp and defined would imply a very strong light source, a very even ground surface and barren surroundings (so no reflected light blurs it.) The shadow is too light and the shading on her doesn't have enough contrast for this to be the case. While you can argue that it is indeed a barren area with an even surface, the human brain likes to interpret blank backgrounds as being backgrounds to yet be made rather than actually being blank. The color of the marking on the paw feels a bit muddy and the hair is rendered weirdly. Otherwise, good color choice and I really like the design. Might be worth it to test out more interesting angles.

How should I draw sombody sitting down?
Do i curve the back or do i keep it straight?
I see some poses that are straight and others that are bent, I'm not sure what looks better.

anyway i can see how it took you 40min considering your linework is very rugged and that you put in more strokes when most of the hair should be done in much less strokes. also it is pretty asymmetrical, ppl aren't entirely symmetrical but first glance looking so uneven, it shouldnt be like that. def invest in a ruler like the prev anon said

you need a better way to draw out the beard, try grinding out some beards using reference, and don't define the shape by going all the way around it like you did with the mustache, the hairs need to be their own thing to make up what it is; a bunched up patch of hair, no outline, or at least i can make out an outline on this one, another anon can pitch in.

Line weight. Your lines are all pretty much the same thickness, change it up a bit. Don't make one line thicker in its entirety, that creates the same problem but from the opposite side. Usually when the line is something pointy (like a V shape) thickening it at the point or at the base and thinning out the opposite side can work. It's a bit tough to explain. Maybe a good look at pic related could help get the point across better.
If you think your sketch looked better than your lineart try following the sketch more closely instead of deviating too much from it. Generally you should avoid having open holes on an outside line like on her right boob. Inside is fine as long as the shape still comes across.

Honestly I think you should take the plunge and just start working on some original projects that you’re interested in. Why did you want to learn how to draw in the first place? Just start drawing those things and figure out how to learn the new skills you need along the way. This, the mouth is hardly needed at all for most expressions. The eyebrows do the heavy lifting, the eyelids help out a little bit and the mouth does the rest. Your ability to copy is really good, it's obvious which ones are and aren't copies of art you liked. That being said, it seems like it's just a matter of drawing something, waiting til you get to a point where you aren't sure if it looks good/struggle with it and then study that for a day or two.
The way I'd recommend studying that tends to work for me is copy a reference while drawing in forms or whatever it is that I want to get out of whatever I'm copying. After that try drawing it again from a different angle or if you're lazy and wanna try fast tracking something like feet, find a bunch of refs from different angles and draw them while drawing the forms in. It's REALLY important that you draw forms even if they aren't landmarked since it makes you thinkore about the ref and therefore you internalize it more. Take notes while you do this, honestly take notes every time you draw. After all, every drawing is practice for the next. Hope this makes sense, I'm not great at making long posts cohesive

The point of that book is to get good at copying. You're doing it digitally so you have the blessing of putting your drawing over the reference, seeing for yourself what you did wrong, and either fixing it or doing it again (don't trace to fix it either lol I've had people misinterpret this advice)

It's a continuous process of trying to map out my ideal video game and the world it's set in. It's a way to come up with stuff to draw ig
