Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Volumetric drawing. Practicing with simple shapes such as boxes, cylinders, and pyramids. Having a good handle on form is integral, because even if you only want to draw people and never want to draw objects (which, really, you shouldn't want, at least in my opinion), you're still going to need that knowledge to do things like drape clothing over a body, or come up with interesting poses, or draw people in perspective, or draw hair and faces.

Really, you need it for everything. The best way to learn it is via simple shapes that you can then use to construct more complex ones.

>Do you get better just by tracing? If you don't draw from scratch, you won't get better! !! This belief is the reason why your drawing skills did not improve. The flow from the body to the character is the work of animation itself. This is exactly what the original picture / video after the animation director has modified. If it becomes the basis, the range of application to the original will expand infinitely

Would anyone be interested in crowdfunding the translation of this book? The method of Animator/Mangaka/Illustrator by Tatsuyuki Tanaka, legendary animator who's so good that he
https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4835456521/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_q-UGFbH4ATFSN

So from the review, it has a lot of texts and few drawings, but the way he presented his ideas is really helpful for semi-pro artists, or at least for people who can draw. It's not a beginner's guide or how-to kind of book though. If anyone's interested, I can order it and start translating it then open the crowdfunding when it's 50%-75% done. Thought I'd share a technique that I learned today and yesterday from Jama's videos (they're on cgpeers but honestly do not introduce anything that isn't covered in the below 4 videos, except for the fact that he sketches in x-z or whatever mode than switches to edit mode and translates the bits of the lineart forwards). Basically the grease pencil in Blender is an EXTREMELY extraordinarily powerful tool that can be used to visualise 3D forms without needing to actually physically model an anime (or realistic) head in 3d space. Some people go further by sculpting a rough head to shine light on

webm related is what I sculpted after watching 5 hours of greasepencil videos including like one or two super introductory videos from Jama (though again he doesn't really cover anything not in the youtube vids)

Oh lmao, I forgot to delete that part. Oh well, he's REALLY GOOD that he debuted in Akira at the age of 23 years old, he's in the same league as Hiroyuki Okiura, Shinya Ohira, Toshiyuki Inoue and other legendary animators. Strangely enough, he rarely worked in anime nowadays, last time he participated in something it was Blad Runner Blackout. It looks like he only worked exclusively if his friends invited him. Just like Osamu Tanabe, these two guys have immense talent beyond any ordinary animators but only showed up once in blue moon.

From what I know, veteran animators at their level get paid much at much higher rate, hence they never showed up in ordinary tv anime, it's not unusual that these veterans only worked in a movie then every one or two years. But Osamu Tanabe and Tatsuyuki Tanaka are such an oddball that they rarely work, even compared to their peers, they only work like once every three or five years. Also, Osamu Tanabe recently made a Lawson (24/7 convenience store) commercial with Ghibli, and in the interview he said "I love to work at the convenience as a hobby", so yeah, they're kind of weirdo.

Yeah, but their skills are beyond that. Osamu Tanabe can also draw storyboards for movie, Isao Takahata tasked him to draw the storyboard for My Neighbor the Yamadas because Takahata himself couldn't draw. Takahata also persuaded Tanabe to help him again in The Tale of Princess Kaguya, their last collaboration. Tatsuyuki Tanaka is super realistic animator and his drawings are super detailed I bet it's really hard for normal in-betweener to fill in his key frames. Aside from animation, Tanaka also made illustration book Cannabis Works.

No, you do not get better by just grinding. You make it seem as if it is as simple as watching a Jewtube vtuber video and mindless copy off it which is exactly what these idiots tout. You improve with observational drawing which means actual life drawing from real world figures and not copying off anime. Learn how to break down a figure into basic forms first which involves cylindrical, box, spherical and even conical forms all the while you are doing gesture drawings in order to have you get used to working with abstract forms and bring about the solid from the lines of action. Don't listen to retards like >>4928861 get yourself immersed in as much life drawing as possible and continue to do gesture drawings while adding basic forms on top of the gesture.

if you want to call it that, sure. yes, you have to draw a lot.
but don't focus strictly on anatomy. try to draw something that you want to draw. like a character or object. designing things is one of the more enjoyable aspects of art.
and always work on the funamentals like doing photo/life studies, gestures and contour drawings.

the op is not even done by the OG OP, and when the threads started there was a general concensus that to be able to stylize anime you need to know your basic knowledge about fundies not necessarily an /int/ but definitely above /beg/, do you think >>4924241 will be able to map a face in 3D to get all the info to mimic any style? let alone his anatomy so he can stylize in whatever anime he choices to learn from and even if that isn't his goal he is still lacking all the fundamentals to learn to stylize, is more detrimental for him to learn to stylize before even knowing the most basic shit. I don't say you shouldn't draw anime if you are beg(personally i believe you shouldn't), but you are most likely to be told the same shit you would in /beg/.

for that guy's case i would say, his whole anatomy looks like shit compared to >>4924635
he drew spaghetti arms, a box for a ribcage, potato legs, feets look like hooves, the hands are terrible one doesnt' have a wrist and the other have all the fingers at the same height and the hair looks like a really thinn wig also the big head.

so what feedback you will say in this case? keep drawing bro? so he can draw this bad but faster, even 10 minutes without drawing just looking at an anamtomy book he could tell that there are too round bones above the feets called ankles really easy to spot yet he completely miss them.
so i will say he needs fucking fundies and probably /beg/ would say the same but this is not beg this general is meant to help with stylization not fucking fundies theres the book and beg general for that sole reason.

On the flipside everyone everywhere seems to have thousands of followers with no effort, doing nothing very different from what I do, and much of my art gets like, under 20 likes on Twitter.

Just cause there's many with 0 doesn't mean 23 likes is a nice number. You'll want at least a few hundred per non-pandering piece to feel good, and upwards of a thousand when you make stuff that's popular and trending.

Twitter feels like it ranges from absolutely NO attention, to insane attention overload. Deviantart, Newgrounds, other sites like that feel more consistent. I think it's because Twitter isn't made for art, so you quite literally have to rely on words, hashtags, and the mercy of retweets, whereas those other sites show your art to randoms regardless of how popular you personally are (DA) or else they have so few uploads a day that people always find your new art (NG). That's my experience anyway. I got 200 likes on some fanart then like 5 on other fanart/original art on Twitter and it makes no sense.

So do I have to get through Vilppu and Loomis, or should I just take modern Japanese guides and run with them? I would certainly have more fun trying to deconstruct anime girls, even if I'll have to study anatomy on the side, but I want to know what I'm missing.

Since anime heads are not realistic heads I've never seen the sense of grinding loomis, I think that's something people keep saying because they have always said that.
As long as you have a way to construct heads, you will be fine. This does not need to be loomis. But yes you need to understand the underlying concept anyway so brush up on anatomy and stuff.

This head is a bad example from ZOL and very obviously fucked to even my beg eyes.
ZOL is great, but some of his drawings are duds, very hit or miss kind of artist, probably doesn't care as much as he should when he does mistakes or maybe his schedule is super tight..
You should only copy the best of the best, for Lilith pictures preferably the key arts of keys characters, the cover pictures, the dakis etc will usually have the best quality, don't just use any random drawings otherwise you might learn the wrong things from them.

The pencil itself isn't the problem, it's that you're laying the lines down a bit too thin for your choice of coloring. You can see the white gaps underneath the scratchy line. Either make the lineart a bit thicker by laying it down a bit more or use a harder brush.

You don't have to change it anon, you just have to thicken it as >>4945189 says. I really enjoy using pencil brushes myself, since it leads to a really light-feeling lineart, especially when you throw in some flats or colors. Pic attached is an example of how I do it; you just need to thicken your lines to the point where there's enough pixels for the lines and the color to really meet and merge with one-another. Make sure the pencil you're using isn't too rough if you're putting down color though, because otherwise the lines and color won't meet properly that way either.

for me was...feeling the form, once you find the forms is easier to construct and having a mental picture to follow and feel instead of relying too much on construction, at the beginning it's not bad to use construction but it should be used mostly to study i think.
heres how i try to think of when i drawing eyes, even when you draw really stylized eyes or anything with barely any form you still base they form on human anatomy so uhh that helped too i guess... ugh...

I think you need to draw the line between one or the other at this point while you're still shaky on the shading department. That said I think the shading on the shirt turned out pretty nice here while the skin and hair parts are not so good. I recommend looking at an artist you like that does the shading style you're looking for and emulate that.

The way you did the higlights in the hair doesn't match with how you did the shading. It's not the worst thing, I just think it's a bit all over the place. The inconsistency hurts the piece. But that's just my opinion.

As for the video, the artist does shade on the softer side of things but there's still defined sections of where the light and shadows are. But there's almost no hard edges while your piece still has some. If you're gonna commit to the style you should study it more and go all the way to fully emulating it down to the brushwork.

Using CSP's 3d models will show you how the figure looks in perspective as well as automagically generating the grid. Then you can gather refs to make it pop. You can also lock brush strokes to the grid so I suggest putting the x/y/z locking enable and disable for perspective grids in the CSP toolbar.

More gesture and more pose practice from real life bodies. The realism of the joints is still lacking. You need to be so good at gesture and poses that you can draw from imagination or 3d poses. Or be able to rotate mentally, so you'll need more perspective for sure. Then you'll need colour, environments etc. style's good though and it's perfect fot social media.

Got to learn to finish illustrations, can't just keep drawing and not attempt the last steps. Broadsword is horribly off, looks like it will go her left but it goes behind her. With that grip, hands go behind each other especially when you have enough handle and a heavy object.

Those mistakes are forgivable. What I hate the most is the same face which you look like you copied pasted. Even with the poor ear placement and jaw connection, you should be ashamed for same facing especially when the head is facing different directions.

Silly question but how much detail should I put into drawing characters?
Like do I include the line from the illium crest or the bottom curve of the ribcage, or the sternocleidomastoid?
I only know that when drawing hands for females you should try reductions when you can and avoid furrows.
