Hi, I don't participate in DAD or LAS, but its users seem to make the bulk of the skilled and dedicated artists on this board. Whenever I get curious and poke my head in here, the art that gets shared tends to be much stronger and more consistent than what gets posted elsewhere on /ic/.
How many people here only come to /ic/ to interact with this thread and the DAD community? How often do you guys critique other members' works, and how often do you critique pieces in places like the draw thread or /alt/ or /beg/? Just curious, thanks

I used to write long responses, but this particular influx of new /ic/ users over the past few months that don't want to hear the easy way out is disheartening. Even though I know some lurkers could potentially benefit from it just feels like theres a better use of my time rather than getting the same several responses I'm sure you can guess. This community is alright, but I mostly lurk. The threads for DAD is almost as bad as the rest of the board or simply dead. We do have a featured daily artist from the site in the threads, but more times than not people would choose to stoke drama than participate. I'm not interested in the Discord so I can't speak for it, but I hear mixed thing about it too. I would ignore the threads and just post on the site; Check out the Discord maybe too.

Yeah I honestly feel the same way. I really used to enjoy the Sketchbooks on CA.org. it doesn't seem the same now though.

I guess it's because people are kinda hardwired to recognise human faces whereas with animals/monsters there's a lot more leeway with what you can do before it looks "wrong". Also by using a a lot of darkness, you can avoid having to draw anything much in it, which I think especially if you're doing a realistic style it's a huge timesaver

Vaaanzzz has clearly got a style going and it works well for what hes doing. His perspective/isometric work is great and I really like he put the full figure in one of them, even though it was shockingly not Vaaanzz proportions, what the hell man? (It was an assignment). He could do with some value studies on his figures and work on the subtle value shifts rounding his forms to make transition into coloured work alot easier; His work could desperately benefit from some colour. He could keep it grayscale to really just focus on the shifting planes of the forms and really shorten the amount of time needed since he seems to be in school. That's not to say his anatomy couldn't use more work, but I'm confident its on his mind and he's working on it consistently already.

Some of your digital linework is particularly nice, Vaaanzz. I'd like to see when your work goes a lot further, hopefully you're still posting by then.

I like the streak, I don't know why because it doesn't actually mean anything. Often I get close to the deadline and then decide to draw just to save my streak and end up really enjoying it.

I also like to compete and compare myself to other dads and the people with streaks similar to mine. Not that it means much but I've always been competitive to a fault so having people using the same metrics as me to improve (and tierlists) helps me put my progress in perspective and watching them study helps me see what I should be working on. I firmly believe that we are all GMI. The challenges are a fun way to do something I otherwise wouldn't do.

For me, dad also functions as baby's first social media because I'm too shy to put myself out there on any other platform or show regular people I know, but sometimes other dads are kind enough to acknowledge my art and that makes me very happy :)

DAD, for me, is like a small cafe/bar where I know a bunch of people.
