Okay, so is there truth to the “style” meme, or am I fine if I just keep learning fundies? Like, I’ll copy shit that I find interesting, but I don’t make a conscious effort to really “direct” my drawings in any direction, I’m content just drawing shit I like and getting better for now. I want to eventually set up social media or do commissions maybe, but should I aim to that end or just take my looser, more enjoyable approach?

So when I'm doing cel-shading, is there any general rule as to when I should be decreasing the Value more than I'm increasing the Saturation, and increasing the Saturation more than I'm decreasing the Value? Both of them look right to me, so I'm not sure if there's a situation where I should do one or the other.

Not exactly sure, but I think there's no hard and fast rule, it depends on the lighting condition. If there's more ambient light bouncing around the environment and you want a more airy feeling to your piece, make the shadow value lighter. Personally I think going with more saturation might work better.

Thanks for the answer. One more question - if I'm trying to shade something that has multiple colors that aren't separated by lines, is there any way I shade them all with different colors on the same layer without having to release my pen, or am I going to have to bite the bullet and separate them on different layers (like pic related) or shade them all using a Multiply layer?. Unironically, hard round brush. Lower the fade a bit to get decent transitions, but not so much that you lose the edge.
Start with flat mid tones, block in the shadow shapes, add light side. Try not to over render, especially since you can see the different steps of values in the ref pic. Keep practicing, study the ref over and over and make sure you understand why you're painting what you're painting. Be conscious about your brush strokes. Hope this helps, now go paint!

Yes, i got to that point when I was in college, when i was painting and drawing daily.

>or is it forever a problem solving process whenever you draw something new

The problem solving never stops. Art is a lifetime commitment, if the idea of solving problems isn't attractive or interesting to you, you probably should find something else to dedicate your life to.

>Can you develop fundies to the point that you can pull it off comfortably without ref or is it still going to be trial and error?

Yes. That's true of learning anything, you master the fundamentals, and then move up in skill, while retaining the fundamentals to where it's almost pure instinct. The whole point of fundamentals is to create a foundation of experience and skills to base higher levels of work on.

After a decent amount of time (and good education, floundering around in Loomis for a year won't get you there), you should be able to create a reasonable facsimile of anything from imagination. And use reference to drill down into something, for more accuracy, or if you run into a problem you can't solve easily.

Well, a good one, yes. And then when you get successful enough, you can hire an agent to take some of the office work off your back. A lot of the big commercial illustrators like Frazetta and Michael Whelan had agents, and their wives ran the home office for them.
Bare minimum, you should know how to write and sign a basic contract, budget, and know how to get yourself in front of the people who'd hire you.

The pocket brush pen is a bit of a "medium" weight. The ink just flows too fast on most papers, you need a LOT of control to stay thin. The full size (squishy) extra fine one with a teal cap is much, much finer. Beyond that there's technically the "Pentel Sign Brush Pen" which is very very fine and a bit stiffer to make it easier to control the weight, but you don't get as much variation range.

Rotating your canvas helps too. I keep a key on my tablet bound to 'R', which is the canvas rotation tool in Photoshop.

yeah, just grind. Draw from reference a lot. Draw your other hand a lot. Use a mirror if you can, for more angles.

Helpful shortcut: Copy hands from other artists. This is the fastest way to improve your hands at first. Not just from Bridgman/Hogarth, but any artist who draws hands.

Then draw a lot of hands from imagination, posing them in all sorts of awkward positions. When you run into problems, go back to your anatomy books / references.

The Kuretakes I tried were not brush pens as such, more of a single unified "nib" that flexes and creates line variation. They don't have as much variation as a real brush, but conversely are easier to control.

>> No.4859051

>>4856895
Which brush pen are you talking about, there are several. The pocket brush flows the most and the wettest, hardest to control probably. The one in your pick is much dryer and easier to control but you'll likely get a lot more drybrushing. I can do fine, controlled lines with your pic related but you have to hold the brush vertically and have a steady hand.

You really aren't going to get anything like a micron unless you use a rigger brush. I'm guessing you probably work way too small as well. Due to ink and paper, you're not going to get very fine detail like a fineliner so I'd say use a rigger brush or work larger. If you want dead lines then use a stiff nib pen like a maru pen/mapping pen.

If you're still drawing stiffly, you should put focus on trying to draw as fast and loose as possible within the time limit you're setting yourself. Focus less on trying to get accurate with the figure you're drawing and more on a representation of the pose the figure is holding down. If you still have time, you can then go back over the figure you're drawing to make any corrections or make it look better.

Also keep in mind the type of line you're using the draw parts of the figure. There's a few books that into this including Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators. The artists who made the book though also discuss it in a few videos posted on Proko's channel:

Figured I'd ask here since you guys are more knowledgeable about image manipulation tools, using GIMP since it's free: Suppose I have two images, one of a background (A), and another of that same background but with a drawing on top (B). Both are in png so the color values for the pixels are same except for the drawing on top in B, how do I use A to substract all matching pixels from B so that I'm left with just the drawing on top?

I'm sorta open to using other tools if need be, but I'd rather not installing something else just for this one off job

Yeah, you're taste and ability to discern good and bad excels at a far more rapid pace than your execution of said skill. You always see more than you can actually pull off and that's what makes improvement frustrating because you hit larger and larger plateaus before your mastery of the skill improves. Its more like a super power because you can just sit and draw all day and practice like nobody else. The issue is that most autists I know that draw only draw one subject all their life (like sonic, cars, or my little pony) so you're going to have to keep that part of you in check if its an issue and make sure you clear through all your fundamentals. But yeah for practice you're good, copy and reference away. How are you supposed to learn how to draw something without referencing it anyways? Just don't get stuck in it, try to draw from memory and imagination as much as you can and don't rely on it like a crutch.

Feeling the form is something that's over-emphasized here, like gesture is. It's just a form of editing/refinement/visualizing that happens in many stages of completing a finished piece. You can do some gestural sketches to start with, pick one, and when you start refining the masses - in the construction stage, if you're doing that, or in the blocking stage if you're working with live models/objects, you "feel the form", or feel _for_ the form, by making lines and adjusting them. It's something you'll keep doing until the piece is done, to keep checking that the whole form is cohesive and flows, and it's place in space feels right, balanced, and is pleasing to the eye, and that you're capturing the contour and volume the way you want. If you think the object feels flat, that's feeling the form.

It will become intuitive and part of the workflow eventually. Just get in the habit of stepping back from something periodically, look at the overall form, and make adjustments if it starts to drift on you - or you need to adjust because other things have changed along the way - or you're building color/value and you want to make sure they're right.

Don't sweat it. It will click for you eventually, or you'll start doing it as part of the process. Just check your work regularly, and it should all fall into place. Early on, if you're still working on construction and other basics, it's a bit early to start worrying about it.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, it's been part of art education since art started. The old masters studied in studios copying the work of masters. Michelangelo didn't take classes, he studied sculpture in the Medici palace copying the old Greek and Roman statues they were digging up. When museums came along, students would go there and paint on sight, trying to copy the paintings there - and that's still done.

Your own reference is always preferred, but there's nothing wrong with working from photos, posters, actual paintings, or physical objects and live models. They're all legit.

Once you leave the study phase of your education, and go out and start making your own work that stands on it's own, then you'll need to work from your own reference/models, combined with imagination, construction, and all the other techniques. And, its common for professional artists to have and maintain a morgue, which is a collection of inspiration, or reference images to get a feel for things you're using. Like, if I'm gonna do a drawing or painting of a crow, I'll look online for crow photos, and use those to figure out how crows work - what the shape of their bodies, wings, legs, claws, all of the parts of their body, and how they move and look from different perspectives - and draw my own crow, in my pose.
But if you're starting out, just get a picture of a crow, and draw it. Unless you have a weird old uncle or grandfather who has a stuffed crow you can borrow, you know?

Is it better to do a bunch of pieces where you focus on a single fundamental, or should I try to do the best job I can on all of my pieces?

Also, someone here told me not to use the airbrush (digital) for doing shadows? I know hard round brush is a meme here but I'm rather new, why is that?

Lastly, obviously you should try to draw outside your comfort zone, but what about something waaayyy outside, like a complicated perspective or anatomical piece? I basically have a piece in mind but I know I'm gonna be way off the mark, should I try anyway?

if you're just a doodler who has never given much thought to fundies (lets say the most you've done is skim a few books and guides, did a figure drawing sessions in isolation here and there) i say there is nothing wrong with doing the pieces you want. Its so you know where you stand in terms of skill.

>Also, someone here told me not to use the airbrush (digital) for doing shadows?
Hard round brush is memed because its a simple of brush but also the versatile. Its not fancy and every program has a variant.
Feel free to adjust it as you see fit. thats kind of the point so you make something that works for you. Someone telling you not to use it doesn't appreciate your level. A lot of people don't know how to teach or understand what tools can help different brains learn. They probably heard "DON'T USE AIRBRUSH" at one point and never bothered to question it because they liked the feel of the brushes they like now. You're not there yet. Not a lot of people think like teachers, but really they just like feeling like experts.
>Lastly, obviously you should try to draw outside your comfort zone
Knowledge is supposed to be built on previous knowledge. Reaching for the stars is admirable, but it'll lead to a lot of frustration and tears. It'll at least teach you where you stand. A lot of self taught people give up because they want to be like their heroes, but aren't learning like them.
But to actually answer your question, draw what you want even if you're ambitious. Do figure drawing sessions so you're faced with a healthy mix of challenge and ease. Also do it with other people. You might think you understand construction, form, etc. But you won't really know that until you do it with other people.
