Post your current drawing here and give constructive critique to others! Don't take anything personal!
Please make sure your posted image is clear, downsized to around 1000 pixels wide, rotated to the correct orientation, and that any unused space is cropped.
If you want critique on a drawing from the previous thread, you can delete it there and repost in this one.

thanks for chosing my pic for the drawthread, also thanks for the kindwords!

For this one I started with a solid ref so it was really easy. For what you want to draw, I suggest just spending a bit of time researching before doing a new picture. Dont be afraid to look for tons of references, especially if its a subject you havent done before.
Once you have that solid library, just start picking parts of things you like in each image and build a coherent design

>>4831241
Very cool but I think the design of the head needs to be pushed more. maybe have a but of that red crest on top of the head, and some color in the eye ( gold maybe) I just feel like the head is one of the last part you look at.

Should help.

You are just trying to copy the shape of a hand and fingers without understanding the form at all. Same goes for everything you are drawing, you just get away with it by drawing stylized faces and such.

Try drawing hands in 3D form using basic shapes.

the mid of the face needs to be shrunk down (the head overall is too long) since the nose being as long as it is makes the whole face uncanny. The hair has 0 volume to it so it ends up just looking kind of like clay or chiselled stone; it looks solid. Some styles can pull off something like that but the realism you're going for in the face makes for a poor contrast to simple hair.

>> No.4835810

>>4835791
Not to make excuses but the hair is unfinished, just put in the general shape. The length of the face is an issue, though the subject has a long face and that's why I made it long. Idk how to fix it. I've tried making the bridge of the nose shorter like you suggested but it still looks uncanny. Guess it's just a shit sketch though the persob I showed it to said it was "beautiful" and it means a lot to them so they weren't lying, I guess

Poster you replied to here.

Well, in short, yes. But it's not the worst I've seen in here.

Quick tips to keep in mind when you're painting a face:

1) Very light values in the skin > you can and should go darker. Now the value changes in the skin (how light or dark something is) are hardly noticeable. This makes everything look really flat. You can hardly tell that there's a nose which in theory should be closer to the viewer than the cheeks next to it, but you can hardly tell from the image. My english is a bit shite, so sorry if you don't understand what I'm saying.

2) more saturation in the future darker areas you are missing right now.

3) Face is very very long. The nose area is the long part. Just shrink that.

Gotta give props to you for using very dark tones in certain places; the eyes, nostrils and under the chin. But once again - more value changes in the skin.

Also, the linework in the sketch looks really fine, shame it doesn't yet translate into digital. But good luck on your journey! :)

Poster you replied here.

Well, sorry, not really. The eyes look nice, but other than that it lacks any real three dimensional structure. The linework itself looks nice, but not the piece itself.

Are you a beginner? You got other stuff you can post?

Do you aspire to become a professional artist? If so, what kind?

No, I've been drawing since I was 5 years old. Has a lot of aspirations of drawing when I was young, but the past few years I stopped pursuing it because of depression, hated my work, etc.

I feel you my dude. I've been drawing since I was a little kid, but I don't feel like I'm anywhere near where I should be. It's not all about technical skill, it's concept, composition and balance etc. The image needs to be interesting more than anything else, visually or conceptually. Which I'm personally terrible at. Again the dude who'se been replying to you semi-kindly here.

How old are you? You sound youngish.

No, you are not a compleat beginner, and with proper guidance you'd be quite good in a couple of years. This piece you posted is far better than what the first portrait you posted, which lacked structure big time.

>>4836421
This on the otherhand doesn't really resonate with me, nor the other posters. But the reason is that when you draw with compleat dark lines and with line art only, it would be quite essential to know STRUCTURE very well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uEtdDvK6Xo

Good place to start. You seem to love line art, so this is something you should really start to practice, so you could draw everything in lines only, but so that it looks extreamly 3D anyway. At the moment your works lack structure; they don't look like they have much volume. The pussy pick had some, but the rest dont' really have much, especially the portrait.

And when you get the grasp of structure, it's much easier to start painting between the lines in a 3D manner when the form is already there with the lines only.

>>4836584
Don't worry about these comments. You aren't that far from being okayish good, but that's still probably a couple of years worth of training. But if you'd want to be for example a proper artist in a game company or so, it's probably atleast 5 years of proper training.

Yes men are always bad influence.

There was an interesting post or video from Bobby Chiu about appeal that I thought could help you, but I can't find it. The gist of it was about the difference between drawing something 'properly' and drawing something so that it looks nice.

Your technical skills are great, I disagree with your statement about your rendering being 'shit'. The details, textures, values and colour are all working really well. I think you're just caught up a bit in making things like correct. There's a stiffness and a textbook feel to the illustration. Yes, we have visible tendons in our feet and our hands, but drawing them with such detail isn't appealing. Yes, our knees are bulbous and lumpy, but drawing them that way doesn't look nice. Yes, we have bags under our eyes, but rendering them out so sharply looks weird. You've got all the know-how and skill to draw really well, now you just have to work on simplifying and abstracting for appeal.

This is a very good place to be in for you, so don't worry. All the grinding and studying has paid off, now you just have to strip it back a bit.

oah this is gonna be epic :D We already have a good sense of scale so that is very good.

One this I notice is that the foreground army silhouette is all very regular. You tried to break it up with the soldier holding the sword but I dont think its enough, He is just too small in the frame. Maybe make him bigger (giant), add a horse under him, or maybe add some war machines to break it up.

another thins is I wouldnt put a flag just over the dragons head

I know I don’t belong in this thread but /beg/ wasn’t helpful this time.

I basically want to know wtf went so wrong in the mid section that it looks so flat? I imagined it to be a linework issue, but it in fact has a better sense of depth without the colors.

Also, advice on composition would be great!

>> No.4842022

1pt has problems with proper depth / objects appearing compressed, especially towards the horizon
adding in atmospheric distortion or some form of planned values either going from dark -> light or light -> dark as it recedes towards the horizon could help
or adding in repeating elements like telephone poles to help create a sense of continuity / means to guage depth might also help

You've posed your character before she swings her club, when you should've, according to everything else in the image, posed her post swing, aka. the last image.

Now it looks super dumb when she hasn't yet swung her club and the other character is taking a hit already.

I dont' think I'll be working on it though because I moved to Europe a few months ago to work at a concept art studio. Brushes don't matter. You can use only soft, only hard, opacity pressure, flow pressure, both, neither, textured, smooth, variable, etc. None of that matters. All that matters is the values. And values is something you get better at with your eyes and brain, not with careful brush usage or a workflow shift.

Edges aren't required for a painting to read or be successful. Edges are pretty sexy when executed well, but they're essentially optional. That's basically what papa Mullins had to say about it.

But if you want to discuss edge control anyway, the picture I posted was painted all on one layer with one brush, and the edge control isn't lacking at all. It's all about control, not using the right tool for the right job.
