I’m looking for a tool or a method that can tell me the amount of color in an image kinda like the way you can use a grayscale layer to check master studies for their value structure but more for hue and chroma.

>> No.4828229

>>4828044
no, seriously, how do you use it?
is it just a collection of tones for people who are overwhelmed by a color wheel?
is it organized? like, are the swatches arranged in a structured manner? why are some strains longer and some shorter? why do some have the odd light value in the middle when they tend to go from light to dark?

>> No.4828234

>>4828229
personally I would just look at it and go "hehe me need tan color me choose tan" while also being confused from the lack of cohesive organization. Its a mystery

....What you need to know:

- each vertical row is a full color bar for skin tone, or a full set of skin tones
- each horizontal row is a skin highlight set of tones (meant to brighten and darken light touching skin in different compositions)
- the light colors first and the shadow ones at the end of each row (from light to dark composition)
- you can mix the color rows and have a more complete skin shade

- the swatch file has the color bars separated by yellow, and when they finish and the highlights start, it is green

Something like this would probably be better as a base. It's meant to be used after you paint in greyscale first. Then apply the gradient with the gradient map feature and add more colors afterwards if you want. It's only available in clip studio paint though.

https://assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1781291

This looks like something similar for photoshop

Now that I reread my post, it does sound kinda confusing. I think this gradient set might be good for Krita users. Krita can load gimp gradients but not photoshop ones. This set has a lot of skin tone gradients

All of these palettes are misguided and shouldn't be used ever.
Skin tones are not regulated to a single color in every situation. How are you going to paint the same skin color on a sunny day compared to night. In a room where only a dim red light is present? A night club with only vivid blue and purple lights? A foggy day with no sun?
Please stop using swatches, they're terrible and stop your progress.
Literally watch a marco bucci vid on color. Just go now please.

subsurface scattering

>> No.4853707

>>4853594
Alright two primary ways how saturation shifts in skin. The first reason is material, the reason they use a saturated color for the "transition" is because of the subsurface scattering, but do not be fooled, that subsurface scattering effect is only really visible in the shadow areas, A LOT of people get this wrong, and think they can stretch that saturation gradient into the light side, but that is reason #2. The second reason why there is a saturation shift in the skin in the light side is much more the second reason than the first, but they do combine. Subsurface scattering will not apply to opaque objects, but you will still see a saturation shift when shading objects. The second form of saturation shift happens because of the saturation level of the local value and the light source. If you have a blue sphere that is moderately saturated being lit by a white light with a barely yellow tint, (give the saturation of the passive highlight a 5 on the photoshop scale) the light will gradually accelerate to the sphere's blue local color saturation (give this saturation a 40), the rate of the gradient is exactly the same as the rate of falloff, but make sure add the ambient light. You have to factor both in to get a grasp on how saturation works with skin. One last thing there is a little subsurface scattering to account for in the light side of skin but the light source will overpower most of it, it does add a tint though.
TLDR sss saturation mainly appears in shadows and lightly changes the skin's tint, saturation gradient in light area has to do with local saturation of skin shifting with saturation of light source. Also don't do what i did and make the rate of saturation change linearly when making the gradient, it accelerates like a curve.

lmao this image is just a 10/10 crab. there are no off-limits colours that are always muddy. you get a muddy effect when both the light and shadow of an object are warm tones( as in your pic rel's left example), versus one being relatively warm and one being relatively cool( as in your pic rel's right example).
similarly, you get an ugly chalky effect when both light and dark are a cool tone.
whoever made that image is probably just trying to con you into being confused and buying their colour palettes
