To often it happens that, when i need to draw and i feel like drawing, my head is like filled with cotton or sand, and i feel sleepy, unmotivated and straight up lazy. So, how to work through this? I have good discipline, but this happens a bit to often for my taste. Pic rel are some of my drawings when i don't have this feeling.

It's supposed to anon, that one and the next are supposed to break you and make you question the fuck is going on. Your job here, isn't to understand, or to know though. It's to push through it with what you think it's supposed to be.

And then, once you finish it and get your review it'll be explained on what you should do if you need it for what it was. Later on this will be explained much better to you.

So don't worry, you're doing great!

change your medium. looks like you're just using a regular pencil. thats no good for shading. you cant get any real contrast with that. get a legit set of pencils so you can use noticeably different values. actually i really like my alcohol markers. a set of grays either prismacolor or copic are great. or i mean... probably not the best habit but go digital. that way you always have layers and a undo button if youre afraid of messing up the sketch. in my opinion you have the wrong mindset if youre worried about messing up the sketch. i didnt see any real improvement until i threw that ego shit away. no sketch is precious. you should be able to throw that sketch out and just do it over again. it hurts at first but its the only way to make real gains. if you go the digital route you can really only get good at digital. youre gonna have trouble with trad mediums.

Hampton's book is about building figures from simple, box like shapes.

just please don't think that drawing boxes is an actual fundamental. It's just rudimentary perspective.

go back and forth between these quicker gestures and longer constructions
so right now you should probably work on 5 minute constructions of poses for a while. do like an hour of those a day, with tubes, spheres and boxes (steve huston has good videos on this)
then go back to quicker gestural drawings and you will find your intuitions for proportion are a lot better

One of the things I've come to notice is that people tend to leave you alone when you're low /beg/. But once you reach a certain threshold, maybe around mid /beg/ level, the reaction from your art seems to change. If you draw anything besides pinups of buxom human women. If you are drawing anything besides titty monster women with 5 foot wide hips, at least on 4chan, you seem to get endlessly bitched at. "Dude why are you drawing that?" "Seriously?" "Who fucking draws that"

Will this bickering continue as I progress? Do people really get upset that some mid beg shitter isn't drawing another gay and pointless pinup of a woman with fertility goddess proportions?

when someone just answers "scott robertson" its because they are copying other people who have said that but it guarantees that they themselves have no idea how to draw cars and machinery, they just see his name thrown around on ic and they saw the car on the cover of his book. scott robertsons books are extremely complicated circle jerk technical manuals. no one is gonna learn anything from them.

the way to draw cars is to start out by learning the side view. its easy because you don't have to worry about symmetry in perspective. it will teach you proportion. itll give you muscle memory. youll understand how to set up a car sketch, using wheels as points of reference and getting an idea of what kinds of cars you like etc. proportion is everything from this angle. once you get to the point that you can do that on auto pilot, you can start working on rendering it. and rendering is just a study exercise. just copy photos to teach you which parts are in shadow, which are highlights, which reflect, etc. no other way to do it.

then over time, you can work up to a 3/4 view. and that really just comes down to being good at drawing in general because you're now at the mercy of perspective. you have to nail it. you have to make it symmetrical. thousands of youtube videos about it from hundreds of artists. sanwong seok (skeren) is good. chip foose. sketchmonkey is one of the worst imo and is one of the few artists that might actually set you back.

personally i never ever draw from reference. i dont see a point. i only sketch cars for fun and i always do it from imagination. usually i don't have a plan before i start. i just know what looks right. ill make it work. i do not "see" the car on the paper and trace it like some people like to pretend they do. ive just done it so many times that i have a decent idea of what works and what doesn't. ic can't draw cars. if you wanna argue with me, pyw or dont expect a reply.

Fucked about with my new tablet. Still garbage at art. The star giving off a strong light was an afterthought but I decided that I would draw something at least daily, even if it's garbage.

I should see if someone has adapted the Ibispaint brushes to Krita, I'm better with those.

don't draw eyes like that. you are basically drawing the negative space. an eye is a sphere and park of the sphere is blocked by the eye lids. when you just draw the opening, it immediately looks cartoony and amateurish. when starting out, draw the sphere. learn to think about it in 3d. draw the lids as something with thickness that goes across the surface of the sphere

lots of chicken scratching. It creates very fuzzy shapes and hard to read lines that are unpleasant to look at. The student line (long lines, but multiple of them stacked ontop of eachother) does have line confidence issues as well however the student line doesnt have unclear shapes and is less unpleasant to look at which is why its generally considered an upgrade. symbol drawings have way too many meanings around.
But to me, it means you are drawing what you think it looks like, instead of what it is.
Like in your bird pictures, the bottom right's bird.
Does the head's feather look like that?
Or you're just scribble lines that you think would represent tthe feathers?
Is the eye only a few circles?
Or you're again just drawing circles to represent the eye?
Your bird drawings are mostly just symbol drawing.

Guys, I have a huge problems with perceiving round objects in 3D space. I just don't feel the form. I can put a shadow where it's supposed to go and make things look round but whenever it comes down to putting another shape on a sphere/cylinder i.e. nose/eyes on a face I always fuck up their placement because I don't feel the curvature of the shape they are supposed to be attached to.
Maybe it's normal and I sperg out over nothing?
When I draw heads I always fuck up the face because I simply can't feel the shape

How long have you been drawing? It's pretty normal to start which is why a lot of people like drawabox. Unironically drawing a bunch of boxes will help you a lot with feeling 3D space.

>>4823984
Not bad at all anon. How long were they?

>>4824062
Symbol drawing is often defined loosely around here. As far as I know the 'official' meaning of symbol drawing is when you resort to simplifying objects to basic shapes or symbols instead of drawing the contours as they are. For example, it's pretty common to draw eyes as dots instead of lining them out as >>4823891 shows quite nicely, or to represent a house as a triangle on top of a box.

It was an evolutionary advantage originally - if you can draw a recognizable symbolic tree as a puff on top of a stick in 3 seconds as opposed to drawing a realistic tree in 5 minutes, you'll have a much easier time communicating simple concepts such as 'there's a lion behind that tree.' A huge part of drawing is actually getting your stupid ape brain out of its own way.

>>4824136
Not too bad anon. I think the really hard lines on the nose sort of throw me off, try toning them back a bit where the nose flows smoothly into the face.

It's hard to notice your own symbol drawing.
I have a hard time with that too.
But you're symbol drawing on everything.

Let's take the wing as example.
The shape is not even the same.
And this is not inaccuracy.
Because you used one oval shape to represent the wing instead of dissecting it into feathers.
You're only drawing a rough contour of everything.
