Drawing from imagination was the best thing that has happened, being able to work with a concept you start from scratch and watch it take shape and form with every new step you cultivate is a feeling like no other. Copyfags and reference pussies will never know this feeling.

What's funny is that, he's copying the reference wrong lmao.

Tracing the image teaches very little and his draw throughs contain little information. What you want to do is copy by eye, and instead of drawing exactly what you see, you want to invent the design as if it were your own. Sometimes slightly changing the rotation of the pose helps.

You don't want to copy 1:1, that's not the point. You want to break it down, by eye, and redraw the likeness and design. Yours should look better, not the same. And copying random animation clips is terrible since they usually don't pay much attention to detail and proper construction.

This will allow you to memorize the design by heart, and understand the process of drawing without the reference. You then want to draw it the next day without looking. This will allow you to remix the design from imagination and apply to your own art.

Ethan is a faggot. At an art convention i walked in the restroom and there was a line of men in the restroom, i was like “wtf” so i looked ahead and there ethan was, squatting on the floor aagainst the wall letting another man pee in his mouth. after the man was done pissing in ethan’s mouth, ethan and i made eye contact and he said “i’ll be your sissy piss urinal, for only twenty dollars.” the next guy walked up and grabbed the sides of ethan’s face and said “silence whore” to which ethan replied “yes daddy, i’ll do anyth-“ but before he could finish his sentence he was gargling piss. i left the room, i didn’t have any cash on me.

admittedly this is before he got big on youtube, so no idea if he still does this but i’ve heard rumors. but still, the point is ethan is a faggot.

If I may.. It's just two phases of the same process. Reference is important to bring the idea together, fix mistakes and fill the information gaps, but it will choke the creativity out of you if you start off with it or you use it as the primary input. Imagination allows you to make a direct connection between what you draw and what you imagine but it's limited to the limited model of reality you have in your brain and tends to fall into conventions or a comfort zone.

ik what u mean, anons.Gonna reference the terms on Sycra's iterative drawing vid and say that I am pretty sure I am 90% intuitive. First day of anatomy/gesture/figure practice I stumbled a bit and had trouble, then went to sleep with the thought in my head and decided to draw individual limbs instead in ethans lemon style, actually. I did 8 arms and 6 legs. Went to sleep imagining the human body flow, creating forms in my mind etc. Woke up the next day and said fuck it screw references and then started drawing like I've been practicing hardcore for 2 months.. I obviously still need tons more practice and iterative shit, and although I'm happy to be like this, I feel guilty for seeing others struggle so much compared to myself but oh well

so many crabs on this board it's amazing. I bet most of you are still make highschool level doodles without any understanding of perspective, form, anatomy, planes, or composition because you refuse to "trace" or use references.
Grow up, in the real world artists use references all the time. Hell, graphic designers constantly use references it's just the way good art is made. Sure, when you've got tens of thousands of pieces under your belt you might not need photos anymore but I promise you that no one here is at that level

>> No.4694291

>>4694239
Yes, but the way Sycra says to do it is to create a simple pose that you can find online, but dont try to find a reference just yet. Create the pose, and do it maybe 3 times. Then go online, find a reference, and compare them to see what you did right and what you did wrong. Hide reference again and re create the figure again until it looks as close to the model as possible.

Essentially what you're doing is: Imagine if in DBZ, to go super saiyan, they had to eat a piece of candy that is not too hard to find but kind of sucks to go out and find. After that, they have to chew the candy in a certain way or it wont work for them

What you are doing is removing that need to use an external force to unlock your true potential, and like sycra says, you are essentially training your muscles to do all the thinking for you. It becomes instinct to draw muscle sctructure and anatomy, second nature, etc.

You literally become disabled if you rely on references too much. Also, drawing, no practicing from imagination is so much more fun because of how much freedom you have.

references are good for starting out, then get rid of them and use the sycra method of learning when you have a decent grasp of human anatomy, then pick them up again when you have mastered intuition based drawing. I started practicing human anatomy a week ago, starting with gesture and then did my own fun things for a day or two, helping other /beg/'s out and I just today used a reference again (pic related) and would you look at that. unbelievable improvement compared to when I started and barely knew proportions.

But I think I understand. Continuously reinforcing my intuitive sense of anatomy and proportion will make me improve

Yeah that analogy was disgustingly garbage, but its just training yourself to instantly know how the human body looks from any angle, and then if it looks off, comparing it to IRL photos and doing simple fixes. I really need to. I tried doing the draw 100 faces challenge and thought I was hot shit for a while but the better you get at drawing the better you get at seeing mistakes too. Her nose and lips look just that much more off, but I spent so long correcting/aligning them I kinda gave up. I'll focus on those features in the future.

(on your piece) I really like how the edges of the form look so definite and the roundness of the face comes out really well with your line work. The perspective of her right eye seems a little funky tho I feel like the eyelid should have more curve and the eyebrow should start a little higher (I could be wrong though)

Clearly the difference isn't big enough. If you're talking about lets sayyyy analyzing muscle structure of a reference photo, but doing a slightly different or just entirely different pose from the photo then sure that could work. Or lets say you analyze multiple references in order to make a certain pose make anatomical sense, then sure its useful. If you're just copying the references pose, that's still copying and you are still dependent on the reference IMO
