I always liked the idea of this guy. in a world that has some people with powers, he was a powerless test subject. The experiment was to see if they could induce powers in humans, but it was deemed a failure. The scientists where about to kill him too, but a small band of powered people rescued him at the behest of a psychic. Ususally I prefer to make comics of my stories, but I feel like this one may actually make a good YA novel someday.

i feel you may have fallen into the trap of overdevelopibg your story. Particularly in plot and setting, when pacing, structure, and character are infinitely more important. I suggest you write out a couple scenes with your MC to get a feel for their character, and then write up a pitch (ch.0) sort of deal so you learn about storytelling during the process.

did you watch the last season of bojack horseman? its sorta like that. Diane, a writer, always wanted to write really dark and prolific biographical novels, but ended up a bestseller with a generic and silly YA novels. Sometimes just doing something silly and fun with an easy premise can still be rewarding.

thats really solid advice. ironically, what im working on now has very much fallen into those overwritten pratfalls -- so youre right on the money. ive rewritten the first 3 chapters of my current project (a comic outline) about 13 times. Shouldnt have jumped right into such a complicated project headfirst. I am not particularly good at coming up with costumes, I have a limited repertoire that expended over time depending on what caught my interest, but its not actually a very big one. I start with character's role and the utility of their outfit, sometimes I study arch types for example, if I am drawing a girly girl , but she is fashionable, I might do some study referencing images I found in fashion magazines or department store catalogues. SometimesI will consider how certain piece can be affixed to the character, sometimes I just draw something that looks cool or sexy , or if I want to expose certain parts. Sometimes I will look for specific roles, like utility workers for example, and break down some of the elements in their outfits and see what I can apply to what I am drawing at the time.

My problem with the design is, I can't tell shit about her character. Why is there candy stuck on her head? Is she a fantasy creature or just incredibly filthy? Why is she wearing a croptop tank top? Is she confident? Her top seems to be falling apart, is her financial status that bad? Her shoes seem expensive and not worn out though. Good character design is defined by being able to tell who this person is just by looking at them. Her pose and expression also don't tell me anything about her. The drawing itself isn't bad, you just have to treat your character's design as if they were an actual person. Her cone shaped head imply action but her boxy shorts make her feel more static and grounded. Shape language and accessories matter.

I was mostly talking about the design elements though. Your drawing skills are definitely there and I understand that a quick sketch is a quick sketch. What I'm trying to get at is that when you think about clothes themselves you have to think why your character would dress the way they do, or why their hair shape is what it is. It's what differentiates an iconic character from a normal one.

I'm not denying that but even on a sheet you can take an opportunity to explore your character more. A good example of this is an artist called Ami Thompson.

Again, what the artist is doing isn't bad, they have something solid to work with already. Encouraging more critical thinking during the design process is important.

Jesus Christ you guys are missing the fucking point. How was I being condescending? I was pointing out basic thought process behind design choices. I picked this one specifically because the artist clearly has potential but the design felt very random and I didn't feel the three choices they were putting up translated anything about the character. I could be used as a starting point to discuss character design. I focused specifically on the clothes. I'm not trying to fucking crab.
