Anyone here quit their day job in order to work on improving their art full time? Thinking of doing it myself. If anyone else has already done it, what are your experiences so far? Do you regret it? Are you “making it” yet? Why or why not?

Is art something you both do as a hobby or as a desire to do professionally/make money off of some day?

>> No.4614906

Do you already fill your free time with art as much as possible instead of other distractions?
If yes, then quitting your job might be doable.

If not, then you're just fantasizing about having free time to draw, but you won't do it. Try instead to fiddle with your schedule in a way that allows you to draw first thing once you wake up, even before work. Then you can start setting your priorities right.

Did it 2 years ago, Now I'm doing 80% of my last salary, it really went better than expected despite what /ic/ said of me and my work

Can you post what your art looks like now vs 2 years ago and how much your salary is currently? Also are you employed by a studio or freelance?

I do, but I currently work 6 days a week, 10 hour shifts, and feel this time would be better spent on doing more art so I can improve faster.

Here's a tip for the others.
Do not listen to /ic/.
Like 99% of them have no idea what they are talking about.
They just want to shit on others to feel superior because their own art is so shit.

"working" for a "company" thats wack bro if its at all possibly to draw cool stuff all the time why not

I've been doing art semi-professionally while working in a high level engineering position, I spend like 40-50 hours a week doing art. It gives a decent balance, and I actually enjoy both of them. Also I could never match the salary I get from my 'real' job, which is one of the larger reasons why I don't consider quitting.

The largest downside in my situation is that I have no time for myself. I couldn't even imagine getting into a meaningful relationship and working these hours.

I was recently furloughed and I thought 'Great I can draw all day.' Then I realized that, because of everything going on I had a really rough start and I wasn't able to do as much as I wanted to.

Around the time I started to get out of my funk I got my job back. So now that I'm working from home I just do both at the same time. It's great, because I no longer feel that I'm wasting my time for 8+ hours a day and I'm not going to work late since I just need to roll out of bed and get to my desk to work.

I ruin threads just by the mention of my name tbqh. I’m only doing freelance (Patreon + commissions + Gumroad) My is mostly from the first. I really don’t like commissions. I would rather do personal works and Patreon allows me to focus on that

Basically, if you are a very beginner it can help but as soon as you have some prominence they will try to get on your nerves

You have probably improved greatly since then. That being said even though there are lot of people here commenting there are still a lot of people here who don't. Even if the loud minority rode your ass hard, there is a probably a lot of people who liked it and just didn't say anything.

Anyways, you are full time artist, who gives a fuck what negative shit people say here.

Yup i quit / retired a year ago. Calculated that I have enough runway for 3-4 yrs of maintaining the same lifestyle.

No regrets, time became more valuable than money. Friends were getting sick, people were dying. I left work, traveled the world, spent my days drawing if I wanted to.

No need to “make it” just drawing for fun.

It’s impossible, but in the end you really dont need much money to live a cozy life

Thanks anon, You're right there were some very supportive people but the shitpost and noise to signal ratio became so one sided I just couldn't give and get much from participating here anymore.
As for being a full time artist, it still feels very surreal.

Don't go full hikkikomori and instead take classes
The social aspect of the learning is an important part and you get to network too

I don’t think it’s possible for me right now to take in person classes due to the virus going around. But I definitely plan to do this once it’s safe to.
