IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

Other anons suggested me to read Hampton and Vilppu after Loomis' head construction chapter, and I'm currently going over 'Figure Drawing - Design and Invention' + random gesture drawing practices, which seems to help and feel more guided than 'Fun with a Pencil' when it comes to constructing a body.

The entire first chapter is about the head. Second chapter is when he goes to body. I did do stick figures and their gestures there as well, but when he suddenly expects you to construct a full character from scratch with the wood mannequin photos as guides (and decide the proportions for yourself) was when I switched over to Hampton's book.

Also in regard to head practice, I felt Proko's videos were also a worthwhile watch because (IIRC) in addition to explaining the Loomis method he goes a bit more in depth about stuff like the placement and size of the side plane (oval shape) of the head, among other things.

beyond symbol drawing, there's another level of /beg/ness that I've been calling "formula drawing", probably someone else came up with it before and has a better name, but I don't know that

it's when you stop drawing symbols, but you're still not thinking in 3D. the most common form is in faces, because they're such a common thing to draw. by accident, you draw a good eye or mouth or nose, and from then on you ALWAYS draw mouths or eyes or noses that exact same way. you don't see the object in 3D, you can't manipulate it in your mind, but it looks passable enough that you keep doing it the same way and don't evolve. I did this myself until I realized it a few weeks ago.

try to unlearn that and see the face in 3D. it's hard.

>> No.4564429

>>4564404
How do you go about learning to think in volumes/3D, anyway? Attempting one of the first exercises in the Vilppu drawing manual made it starkly clear to me just how deficient I am in this regard, but I'm not sure how to address it. I can imagine whatever I'm drawing as a 3D object and pretend I'm running my pencil along it, but a 3D object effectively has infinite contours I could run a pencil along, and before long I get mixed up regarding which contours I should be following and at what angle and my visualization collapses.

Other people say to to think of it like you're sculpting the object into the paper, but I'm not sure how to interpret that. I can imagine I'm sculpting an object, but the tools used are so different in my mind that I can't translate that to something I could be doing with my pencil. I know that's probably taking the analogy too literally, but I wasn't sure what else to try doing with that advice.

My background, for context: I've been scrabbling since I was a kid. I did some professional work as a pixel artist and some 3D too, since 2015. I got into "real" drawing this year, never did it professionally.

I don't know about you, but when I draw a line on the canvas I know intuitively if it's right or wrong. most of the time I don't know how to turn a wrong line into a right one, but I can "feel" the wrong ones without thinking about it. I think the first step is (at least for me it was) learning to listen to that intuition. You've seen a lot of art, you know what looks good and what doesn't. if you draw a line and it feels wrong, stop and think about it.

My intuition tells me that literally every single line I've drawn in my life is wrong. I wish I was exhaggerating. Given my current level of skill, my intuition may in fact be on point, but I've had to learn to block it out because listening to my intuition leads to paralysis and doing nothing but re-drawing lines forever. On a conscious level, I know I'm a beginner and I'm fine with my work sucking, but on a subconscious level my perfectionist tendencies may be working against me.

It may prove to be useful later, once I have more experience, though. I'm still very new at this. I unfortunately grew frustrated with my lack of progress with drawing as a teenager, and decided that it was impossible to learn if you weren't born with art-genes. I've dabbled a bit into pixel art and 3D modeling for some videogame mods, and I'm decent at painting miniatures, but I only have a few months of drawing experience.

Besides fucked up proportions, I think I'm doing something wrong here. In the project 2-B of Keys to Drawing, you're supposed to emulate one of the artists' style given there. Give Drawabox a try, or Dynamic sketching by Peter Han, which is what DAB is based on. ModerndayJames is decent too. The goal in the beginning is to just understand how to break things down into simple shapes, making it easier to plot out. A box connected to a cylinder is far easier to place in 3d than a head and neck. From there you can break them into more and more shapes as you get more comfortable with it.

Established exaggerated styles like the one you posted are done without much regard to the strict rules of e.g. head construction in this case and usually have their own internal set of rules. The artist will nudge things where they shouldn't be in order to create a more appealing final drawing at the expense of technical accuracy, (for example if you were to create a 3D model based on one of the drawings and then rotated into the angle of the other drawings, they wouldn't match up) but it still follows basic shape/depth/anatomy rules.

You can't start with drawing like this without first thoroughly understanding the basics, so I'd suggest grinding Loomis and studying until it clicks, but also try to make your own stylized drawings and compare them to the existing ones, ask yourself what was done and why, and what would've it looked like if it were done in another way.

Don't be afraid of using the hard brushes, I retouched a few edges for you and as you can see things with hard edges come into focus better. Mind your ellipses, the bowl still isn't great but it's a bit more believable now. Anyway good luck, hope this helps.

I'm spending too much time colouring and experimenting, I think I'm just gonna stick to simple cel-shading since this is my 3rd drawing.

Pick out my mistakes please <3
i can name:
>background(i spent 30 seconds just to have something, i know the lighting is super off for a beach), weird perspective, ear not in the right spot, no effort mouth, nose too small and slightly wrong postion, overall weird amatuer shading, 0 idea of anatomy, super basic eyes.

Alot of what I'm doing wrong is due to having no basis of art knowledge, especially anatomy but i think I'm doing really well considering i've been drawing for about a month on and off collecting resources.

So possibly a round sketch brush

Either way it will look the same because the lines are too small to show texture.

You didn't really capture the angle or the expression, make sure those are about right before you proceed. Your expression of form is kinda weird mix of contours and hatched shadows which is definitely not a wrong way to do it but it still means your values must be correct for the face to read as a face and the whole thing to not look flat. For example look at refs nose shadows darkness compared to yours. Also your contour lines are scratchy in places where they should be clean, like the jaw of young woman.

Also it would help to get crit if you bothered resize your images to ~1000pix

It's important to find relationship between width and height as well. Typically the width of the head from along the browline is up to the hair line although you will want to measure many heads to find some ratios. Rarely is it up to the browline though which is where you missed the mark by a substantial amount. That's why your head looks like a horse-head or something.

Im just a shitter but I would assume if you can't at least approximately draw what it is you are envisioning/imagining, then you probably aren't envisioning/imagining it as well as you think you are. Similar to how people say they sound really smart in their heads, but when they speak outloud or write down what they're thinking, it seems stupid or "comes out wrong". These things seem better in your head because our brains are very good at tricking us when it comes to these sorts of things.

Thanks for the advice but I'm not sure I'm picking up on it. If I understand correctly, the width of the head should be equal to the height from the browline to the hairline? When you're talking about heads, are you refering to the cranium? (the ball base in Loomis method).

It's weird cause I'm pretty sure I'm interpreting Loomis measurement correctly but obviously I'm not cause my heads look retarded.
