IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make YOURSELF feel proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~ 1000px, <1.1mb

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in MSPaint

? ? ?
There's a really old sticky in town! You can fucking read it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>No rules lol
/beg/inner posting is encouraged.
Every point of view is valid even if you were a day into art.
You MUST give advice and/or critique other people's work in order to have healthy interactions with each other so we all can make it.

>Before you post your work
1. It's true that the sticky is a bit outdated and most people don't care for reading it or even do the excerise of the upside down Stravinsky so if that is your case you've come to the right place,
people in here is waiting for you to post your work and give you proper advice. In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are strongly discouraged since it doesn't help anybody to get better.
We DON'T expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we DON'T expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
We are happy to provide you those tools in this thread.

2. DO POST your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. It doesn't really matter if you're asking for a SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject. You might as well post no text whatsoever along with your work.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", meme replies such as "Loomis" are strongly discouraged, we don't make fun of one and other here.

Follow these simple rules or maybe not but always remember to be nice to /beg/s and the people giving advice at all times.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

No.
Gesture is the flow, rhytm, action, motion, life of a subject.
It's nothing really concrete like the skeleton or form, it's somewhat more abstract then that.

im /beg/ btw but some suggestions are:

waters too shallow
try to improve the lighting
try to work a more dynamic pose
try to get a better background foreground composition (currently your logs are pointing the same direction as the creature/ try better size variations, etc)
try to improve your anatomy so the muscles are more believable
try to work on the texture of your objects (currently everything looks really smooth and muddy)

if you want to remaster a scene like this maybe go through the process of a thumbnail and then work in a concept art of the creature with a proper pose and then make a greyscale focusing only on values

Hmm not really sure how to do that.
When sculpting the forms of the head everything usually ends up a bit rough, I guess I could try making things smoother.
Also when I feel things out I end up with a lot of lines everywhere, which seems to age people, so maybe clean that up.
Guess I have to experiment a little.

Use a brush that has opacity/size pressure control. You should be able to make very light almost non-existent strokes. This allows you to make light "exploratory" lines. Good for beginners because it allows you to "feel the form". And more importantly explore!

As a /beg/ you don't have a good idea of how thing look yet. So being able to make exploratory lines will make it so you don't have to visualize everything in your head. You'll be able to put some light lines and build on them with heavier strokes.

I was gonna explain how to make a (((BIG SCHNOZ))) look feminine, but after seeing your work I think the brush advice is more helpful!

hello i consider myself a /beg/. but things that stick out to me are:

proportions. this person did a ok job on the reference. the arms being too long has to do with the arm slope and shoulders being abit off. this person also decided to slap an anime head ontop of a really tall model which throws it off as well.

the pose. the pose is very awkward in anon's drawing because instead of holding a cup like in the reference he chose to rotate the forearm to an open palm gesture towards the viewer. try tucking in your arm and doing that in real life and you will feel how strenuous it is.

the overall gesture. not too off but some subtle mistakes in key areas ended up making a big difference. areas like the hip slope and breast slope are off and the shoulder is too narrow.

hope this helps

After symbol drawing and drawing countless boxes and insects and perspective and gesture and basic construction, I've reached anatomy, but I have a question.

My end goal is to draw anime/catoony characters, so should I start copying that style while I study real anatomy or should I do real anatomy first and then start copiying? Keep in mind i'm not trying to skimp on anatomy. I just hear a lot of people say you should start copying other artists but im not sure if its a meme or not.
And I'm also currently unemployed so I gotta a lot of free time to study both at the same time.

>> No.4552380

>>4552377
Anatomy isn't as important as people make it out to be.
Good anatomy isn't what makes a good drawing.
Good shapes and perspective is 1000000x more important than anatomy.
Anatomy can help bring your drawing to the next level, but it's not a requirement.
So just copy a bunch of anime and focus on the shape design instead of anatomy.
You can always learn anatomy later. It's very easy to learn anatomy if you already have a good base for figure drawing.

What they don't know is that your brain is a finite resource that needs to recharge.

You just have to take it in a little bit at a time, look into using the Pomodoro technique and try to build a habit that way, Even 30 minutes a day isn't too bad to reaching some level of competency by the end of the year. Just copy a shit ton of references and eventually you will start to memorize how certain things look and you will be able to pull them out of your head without looking at anything.
Simplifying things in terms of basic forms like boxes can help (construction), if you can rotate a box in your mind and draw it then you can just draw lots of boxes to build up your image, like building things out of Legos. But it'll always be hard to get drawings that look clean and natural in this way, unless you also have a ton of experience drawing the thing fro reference.

If you can you should try to set aside a separate area exclusively for drawing. After drawing for some specified amount of time, then you can reward yourself by playing a little or whatever you'd consider a treat.

It is the everything, listen and focus here for a minute when you don't have the expertise of knowing how to draw heads, torsos, legs, hands you'll draw what you think is correct and it results in a minor resemblance of the actual body parts, "symbol drawing". You need to start studying how to draw these things individually and learn how to connect them, whether it's anime, cartoons or real life otherwise you'll end up drawing like this guy >>4546294 who just draws whatever his brain tells him to draw without any knowledge on how to actually draw.

The only meme here is believing that Loomis is a meme. You have to put in context what you're reading, if you are currently reading "Funsies with Pencils" then you must realize you're drawing "cartoonish" heads which serve as a base for moving on into drawing whatever you want to draw.
Finish the book do the exercises and move into the next book or maybe not I'm not anybody to tell you what to do but don't jump into conclusions because somebody said "Loomis is meme XD"

I'd be perfectly fine with saying that all art, even "photorealism", is ultimately made of symbols. I'm not sure if I'd actually say that for photorealism, but you could make an argument for that, and it wouldn't bother me. Why should it? I'm the one who was arguing that telling someone that they're "symbol drawing" is a misguided critique when it comes to cartoons.

Yes I understand those parts, but how does one go about constructing the rest of the BODY after the stick figure framework? Loomis literally just says "add the meat balls between the joints and done" without giving that much in-depth advice on fleshing out the parts and getting the proportions correct during the construction phase as much as he did with the numerous head exercises - exaggerated or not.

Your issue is that you don't have the symbols for the necessary body parts yet.
Just copy your favourite artists until your visual library is big enough, that's when construction is going to make sense.
There's no point in constructing a human figure if you don't know how to actually draw the final pieces.
Construction helps with proportion and perspective, but it isn't a shortcut to figure drawing, you still need to know how to draw the figure.

The brush I use has a shape and texture to it that I like, but not necessary.

Just look for a brush lets allows you to comfortably make light strokes with light pressure, and reach full opacity with heavy pressure.

Pic related, hopefully you get the idea. Not familiar with sai brushes but look for some with these attributes! I also look for the same characteristics in my erasers just without the size variation. Allows you partially erase something and use whats left, almost as a reference of sorts. In Fact the bottom brush is the exact one I use for my eraser!

Also on the right I have my wacom pressure settings, but I don't encourage you to copy! I was having issues with reaching full opacity, even when pressing very hard. So i moved the top right corner inwards. I moved the bottom left corner inwards as well to help with lighter strokes. I'm able to touch the tip of my stylus to my tablet without it registering a stroke, just like a real pencil!

hello i consider myself a /beg/ and my general opinions for your sketch are:

the pose is off balanced, your shoulder and hips are sloping the same direction which makes all the weight lean one side with nothing supporting it. (blocking out the whole character beforehand can help with this)

proportions and anatomy are off. try to get more comfortable with basic body structures and muscle detail (there are lots of online resources and exercises for these topics)

concept is ok but theres lots of ways you can expand on that as well (but you should focus on your basic skills first)

hope this helps

It's not really about unlearning, it's about actively learning how to draw in the way that you would like to draw. Your problem isn't bad knowledge, just a lack of knowledge.
Start doing studies of artists you want to emulate in addition to learning traditional figure drawing.

if you want to draw characters then yes drawing models and getting familiar with body shapes and curves will help.

you will develop a general sense for things like how long legs and arms should be relative to the rest of the body, how large eyes nose and mouths should be on the head, etc etc

once you have a good understanding of the rules then you will also be able to stretch and bend those rules without breaking the forms completely

Are you the same anon as >>4551638 ?

If so this is already a big improvement!

A few more tips. Women tend to have softer and rounder shapes. The proportions are also different, women tend to have smaller jaws and bigger eyes. Shrink the jaw, soften the brow ridge, jaw, and cheeks!

Angular shapes can still be used, just look and the nose and lips! Just keep practicing and trying your best. With enough mileage you'll start to intuitively know what works and what doesn't!

If you can't have a seperate space and have 2 screens, you could try at least having an image open with a color based on what you are doing.
For example right now i am on 4chan so i leave a brown color image open on the other screen as being on 4chan is "enjoyment." When i am drawing i leave it on blue as i am being productive.
When you are more aware of your behaviour it is easier to change.
