IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomy".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice.

Post an example of a basic anime drawing (not one of those highly rendered half-anime half-realistic paintings) that you would say does NOT look as flat as a board. Or would you say all anime looks flat?
It's really hard to calibrate comments like this, it's hard to know how much you're trying to encourage someone to work as well as they can within a cartoony style and how much you just don't like cartoony styles.

Nothing really lines up to a vanishing point and it looks like there's a multitude of vanishing points going on. It's ok to be a bit sloppy so long as things are relatively in order, especially for city scapes. I think you would benefit greatly by working through perspective books and/or looking up perspective vids on YouTube. Start with a ruler, but practice freehand too. Even the greats like Scott Robertson use ellipse tools and rulers, even though his freehand is basically robotic.

Some amateur things I learned recently:
-Shading always adds tons of appeal to artwork. Even if it's simple details of white and grey it is super effective. Shading might even be the largest appeal of artwork over all.
-Linework that is not black can be very effective sometimes, an extension of the above point
-Cartoony actions and effects are also very useful at enhancing appeal even if it may not seem like it at first

>good
None of the lines he's drawn are in the right place. That's why he had to draw so many of them.

Getting up to that skill level is easy. Here's how to do it.

1. get paper and a pencil
2. watch these four lessons (pic related) from https://www.ctrlpaint.com/library (under heading 2 - traditional drawing)
3. go here https://quickposes.com/en/gestures/random and draw the poses. don't be afraid to skip bullshit poses. you just want normal, natural stances - ones that you think you can do easily. don't make life hard for yourself at this early stage.
4. draw loosely with a focus on getting proportions right. Don't spend too long on each drawing (I'm talking like 10-20 minutes max, but if you can do it faster and get it good and right then do so). All you want to do is block out the torso and the limbs, you don't need details. just get length and proportions right.
5. critically analyse each drawing after you've done it, before moving on to the next one. Identify what's wrong with it and think about what you could do differently next time. If no answers come to you then just move on.
6. do this every day for a week or two, 3 or 4 figures per day. that's an ideal scenario. you can do less per day over a longer period. they're quick drawings so it's easy.
7. DO NOT SKIP MORE THAN ONE DAY IN A ROW. skills fade with disuse. keep it fresh by doing it often. make the lesson sink in.

This will teach you how to quickly block out a pose with correct proportions. Once you've done that the rest is just window dressing. To go from blocking out a pose to drawing something like the sketch that was posted is literally just a matter of adding more lines until it looks right. For beginners, it's proportions and pose that are the hard parts.

No problem. For reference, here's one from my sketchbook from when I was working through it myself so you've got a better idea of the amount of detail (or not) required. You can always add more detail where appropriate - it's really easy, so long as the pose is correct.

The point is that once you've got something like that pose down not even a retard can fuck up the rest of the process. You just add your construction work in over the top and because your pose is bang-on it's immediately obvious when the shapes are in the wrong place or suchlike. Like I said, so long as the pose is correct it's just a matter of adding more lines until it looks right.

The only thing it doesn't help with is faces, but you can practice them separately and then just staple them on as required.

the bottom abs also go into the body when connecting to the pelvis

also the crotch on his pants isn't centered relative to where his center is: follow the form from his bellybutton down, don't do the lazy thing and half out the figure to find the crotch and belt buckle

I'd say your biggest problem is with sizes and shapes. You need to get your measurements really accurate before you begin drawing, otherwise you'll be way off of the ref.
The best way to get the measurements correctly is to first establish the edges of the figure, i.e, the width and height of the head you're drawing. Using your pencil, measure the point that is furthest to the left and the point that is furthest to the right, that will give you your width. Do the same thing for top and bottom, and you will get a box that will contain the entire head/figure.

After you've established the main size of the figure, go for the smaller shapes, for example, measure where the tip of the nose is compared to the top of the head or the bottom of the chin, compare the positions both horizontally and vertically.
Another great method to use is to visualize angles, choose 2-3 points and try to see the angle (or the triangle) that they create. Ignore all the countours and details of the face and just focus in on these 3 points that you've chosen, and observe the angles between them. This method used along with the horizontal/vertical comparison measurments will greatly improve your accuracy.

The point is to start with big, abstract BUT ACCURATE shapes. After you've laid down the foundation, only then you go for the wrinkles and the folds and the contours.

If you want more info on this I suggest watching some Youtube vids namely Proko.

Depends on what your 'goal' is. Given that you take to this particular style (and I assume you want to keep it that way), I'd say practice 'proper' construction, figure drawing, and anatomy with the caveat of cross referencing it with the style you're interested in eventually adapting to. eg: draw the real thing, then try to figure out how that thing translates to your desired style. That way you can get mileage in the core skill without getting mentally wiped out by the grindstone.

>books/exercises/etc
The art books thread is extremely solid when it comes to reference material, guides, etc. Personally, I find vilppu videos useful for a triple threat of construction, anatomy, and figure drawing, but that's just my personal preference, so you might find something else fits.

That is the friggin' point! So that you can improve, if you are forced to draw bigger you are also forced to learn to plan your picture better which then necessitates that you learn measuring and planning. Which will serve you better even when drawing smaller. Then once you can plan better you will become more economical with your workload becasue 1 hour of planning saves 2 hours of work. Then if you are comfortable in drawing bigger you will also be able to add more smaller details.

This isn't rocket science Anon it is common sense progression.

I'm not quite eligible to give advice, but I suggest first getting comfortable with basic 3d form. When doing a portrait, I initially construct with a box and add on top of that. My drawing is a bit off model, but hopefully it shows what I mean.
I suggest learning the Reilly method for face construction.
When starting out, you can't spend too much time analyzing, measuring, and even tracing once in a while. Do whatever it takes to learn the subject. Observe how and where various facial features overlap.

(disclaimer since you did not pyw we can't tell if you are chicken scratching or not, also chicken scratching is usually way worse on traditional media, digital is more forgiving about it)

>explain to me why chicken scratching is bad
It is unclear, it does not put down lines that are clear, thus even if it is a sketch when you do your lineart above you cannot be sure where you intended that line to be. Especially if you are drawing things that are highly detailed and you do not have experience with.

It takes time, having many smaller less visible lines is wasted time if you want one solid line after. You could spend that time crosshatching for shading.

It is more strain on your body, yeah I know this sounds trivial but if you are drawing a lot you really need to pay attention to be economical because you will feel the pressure of time and pressure of fatigue on the body. Trust me, you will have a ton of other shit to worry about that you don't consider when you are still starting out.

Gesture is where you start, gesture is the basic movement or "action line". But that is there to help you find the basic position of the body, the you measure your body proportions to find where things start and end

Where does the crotch start? Where do the legs end? Legs and torso should be roughly the same length so the crotch is somewhere at the halfway. Where does the arm start? Where does the elbow end? are the lower arm and upper arm equal (or at least similar) length? Are the legs the same length as the torso? Is the head long big as the forearm? Is the face big enough so that you can cover it with two hands (like you can in real life?) or the figure has massive gorilla hands that can grab a whole human skull and crunch it in their palm? And so on and on, this is why you learn figure drawing to know the basic measurements of the body.

Once you got the proportions down THEN you should use your ref to add the details.
