its a stylized completion marker. i dont agree with OP's stylization though.. I think it's inspired by cursive 辶 but you can't just take things that you like from one character and add it to another.

well again, reading cursive is not something you can just come up with, especially without context

so what's the appeal of semi-cursive? why not go all the way?

Cursive is the hardest and you need to understand cursive, clerical and standard to do it well. After I started uni, I stopped learning from my calligraphy teacher and progress just stopped I guess. Plus semi cursive is just super common with a lot of variation.

true, true. so I've spent the last hour and a half practicing shufa with the ink brush tool in photoshop. set to these settings: 123 and 275, so you wont need to press down on the tablet much. but obviously this will take longer than 90 minutes to master. unironically, all of this time was spent writing this character. felt relevant as i should've thought of using the ink tool earlier.

so to cope without a real brush... i recommend finger painting. regular calligraphy threads should be a part of making /ic/ "great again." definitely good practice for line control.

Very impressive.

I got decent at yan-style kaishu after a year of grinding, but never graduated to semi-cursive. I'll post a pic if I can find one.

Keep it up! My advice to anons getting into Chinese calligraphy would be:

1. Grind '一': The single most important thing I ever learned was how to draw a horizontal stroke (heng). It took me a month or two of grinding '一's and '三's before I was able to reliably lay one down. Nailing that part of the brushwork will take your calligraphy to a whole new level.

Pay attention to how '一' begins and ends. The ends aren't flat, they're bony, although they are often made sharper or rounder to spice things up. Bony ends are achieved by a twisting motion (pic related) that is unfortunately best learned through a teacher.

2. Play with line weight. Make horizontal lines thinner and vertical lines thicker or vice-versa and keep it consistent. Likewise, play with dots (dian).

3. Know how to hold your brush. It's all in the wrist.

4. Know the stroke order!

5. If you're serious about giving this a go, get some rice paper and a medium size calligraphy brush (supplies are available on Amazon). Copy paper will never give you the effects you're looking for because it doesn't absorb enough ink.

Looks p great to me, I think you can move onto semi cursive now. Or you could try looking into 欧体, which I personally like more.

>> No.4546731

书法 turns out to be extremely frustrating
looks extremely simple and straight forward almost child like but is in fact almost impossible to get right not even talking about repoducing the exact model just trying to make it look half good is a chore

马 is the simplified form of 馬.
The thing is about Simplified Chinese characters is that a lot of them are actually standardised versions of cursive forms. So instead of writing 马 in cursive, try it with the original 馬 form instead.

欧体 is really pretty. It looks more subtle. I wish I had given it a try back then.

But practicing calligraphy stopped making sense after I moved back from China.
