don’t try too hard to be edgy, make things more uncomfortable to look at and create a disturbance in reality with your art. a lot of what makes things creepy is the tainting of innocent things or the idea that there’s something lurking beneath the surface (whether it be physical or psychological) and the fear of the unknown. contrast is important too i think, like in the op pic theres some stereotypically cute elements mixed in to create some contrast. there’s not really a concrete answer with art because your view of creepy could be a lot different from mine. ganbare anon

certainly not this. it looks ridiculous rather than creepy. it's pretty hard to convey horror through comics or illustration, since sound is often a key element in horror (not talking about jumpscares here). Junji Ito and the eroguro guys might make stuff that look disgusting but I wouldn't say it's "creepy".

Leave things vague, mystery is one of the best ways to capture an unsettling feeling. Keep your drawings on the looser side. Try not to go too overboard in making things weird or grotesque, it's more effective to be subtle.

imply mental illness in your methodology. chicken scratch like a schizo, meticulous masochistic patterns like a person who suffers from acute OCD, dirty and messy/unkempt like a person in deep
depression or psychosis.Throw in some symbolism, make it seem like your permanently a child due to some traumatic event or memory that haunts you. draw your hallucinations, good or bad, non-sequitur, etc.

or you can go the bad trip/nightmare/macabre route and just make everything grotesque. do photo studies of medical conditions and injuries. pus, hair, vomit, blood, excrement, cysts etc. Work at night and if you naturally get creeped out try to trigger your reptilian brain and make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Play around with mixing the unpleasant in all its forms; gross, bleak, depressing, stressful, painful, uncomfortable, etc.

"The Kubrick Stare" is one of director Stanley Kubrick's most recognizable directorial techniques. A method of shot composition where a character stares at the camera with a forward tilt, to convey to the audience that they are at the peak of their derangement

I think it's all in the expression. Anime is never scary because most of it has big eyes and big eyes by default just aren't scary. That's why the Grudge is 0% scary, they made her eyes even bigger than they already are on the actress with makeup, made her all kawaii and shit. I think I made it a little bit more creepy with that said

Junji Ito’s work is interesting and well made but I would hardly call it creepy. Same with Bernie. They’re horrific but nothing that’ll make your spine tingle and keep you up all night.
Barlowe is great though. His work is very uncanny but fantastical at the same time.

Good point. The reason I chose those three had to though with how they influenced me personally and their work comes into mind when someone mentions horror. Steve Bissette, Gou Tanabe, or Richard Corben would’ve also been mentioned, their stuff is fucking great. Especially Richard’s work on Hellboy and Heavy Metal.

... I was going to post another image after this but it turns out The Old Man in the Lake scares me bad, and I don't want to!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Man_of_the_Lake
And it really shouldn't, it's just an old log that floats vertically in a lake. It's something about how it's barely visible going down, it conveys the depth far too well.
The wikipedia article is mostly fine, but image search gives bad thalassophobia.
