None, I just keep trying to see what's wrong with each drawing and then correcting it in the next. Plus, I've been doing a lot of finished pieces, so there's a lot of steps per piece that I can reflect on, and correct mid-drawing.

kind of a hirohiko araki style you got going. the reason most people find your new style ugly is because of the dramatic difference in value between your eyes and the rest of the render. by value i mean brightness. this is counterintuitive to how people expect shadow to fall on objects. it can be aesthetic choice, but here it feels as if you may not be doing it on purpose (leading to discomfort). as well, your proportions have become more exaggerated, yet your rendering has become less so. that leads people further into the uncanny valley. your render is not bad, but your current choice of style does come with those downsides. i suspect if you posted lineart of both (without shading) people here would undoubtably prefer your newer work.

On the offhand that this isn't bait: The one thing you improved on is your line quality, and barely at that. Aside from the inclusion of ears and said line quality, there is not a single aspect of May's that is better than March's. The latest version's eyes and mouth have been downgraded and her expression is nearly incomprehensible. The left looks like she's smiling, but the right one appears either pained, concerned, or plain retarded. The hand on March's is particularly egregious, looking like it belongs to a Sangheili from Halo. The hint of her forehead above her left eye looks like a tumor. Her shirt's collar is lopsided and barely decipherable as an article of clothing.
Maybe in a few more months you'll be able to publish a "how to draw anime and manga" book like Chris Heart.

I think there’s definitely a gene involved.
My mom is Asian and can’t draw for shit, she’s stickman tier. My dad, who’s white, never learned how to draw or paint and is actually pretty good. He even managed to sell some paintings. His brothers all know how to draw more or less, one of them even earns money only by selling paintings. They never learned fundies or anything.
Among the kids, some of us know how to draw, more or less, one of my cousins even end up in some animation studio.
As for me, I never tried to learn fundies or anything, I just draw for fun and I startes drawing from around 2 years old. I made pic related when I was around 12-13. I don’t think it’s great but I think it’s better than average for a 12-13 year old kid.
I think the whole manga thing is real; my parents both work in the art field and I grew up with art books and we spent our sundays in museum, it might have helped.

When people expect you to do well, you do well
Your(western) parents already gave up on you the moment you were born and are happy for anything you do which at the same time heavily diminishes actual effort, skill gain and quality.
It's purely cultural, but thanks to that we don't have to deal with widespread suicide, depression, stagnant and even negative population growth.
Since people are still against the idea of Europe it also means that every country seeks out individualism. Towns/cities remain small and everyone being individually special is being celebrated. There aren't enough artists or good teachers around either to learn proper self discipline because, from birth, teachers are being taught they can't do wrong and will never strive to be utterly good. They are expected to be teachers, not good teachers. You could find a group of heavily invested individuals everywhere in a high population area such as japan/tokyo so along with an economy of expected skill they also have dense areas for like-minded individuals. This in turn also boosts rivalry/competition. It's why investing in education is so fucking bloody important because the real skill growth comes from rivalry/camaraderie/competition. The more dropouts, the less challenged the people that stay in are.

All asian countries have this, kinda giving a weeb shot at this. Asian countries aren't all that perfect but it's a different mindset. They usually lack creative clarity and usually follow in patterns and their art as art as a whole grows very slowly. They are strong in recreating what has been done, not figuring out new stuff or ways of creating or designing. The entire Chinese market is solely based on this principle: just buy innovation from foreign countries, we have the manpower to turn the innovation into products.
Really generalizing rant of the "why is there always an asian better than me"

Am I reading this correctly, why would there be no such accumulations of skill in the west?

Yes, he was a garden designer and she was a violinist before both turned into antique art dealers. Think of them as food critics, they may not know how to cook as good as chefs but they know what’s good.

It has more to do with the fact that in the Japanese (and to a lesser extent Korean and Chinese) weltanschauung a high level of craftsmanship, excellence or "grade of execution" (for lack of better terms) has spiritual and aesthetic value and that fact is taken for granted, just part of the background radiation. The nature of the given activity really doesn't matter; these concepts apply to basically any activity where becoming more skilled improves the outcome - farming, drawing, cooking, sports, machining, pottery, shooting, mountaineering, medicine, conducting trains, carpentry, driving, whatever.

tl;dr jap culture encourages and values practice with intent

Your ability to draw the face regressed. Which, you know, that should be the one thing you should be good at if you only draw portraits.
