What are beliefs/mentality that held you back as a artist?

Back in 2014-15 I had it in my head that if I sat down and studied artists who I was inspired by, that I would be able to get to where I wanted without looking at fundamentals (shit, I didn’t even know what a Loomis was), or even observational drawing desu - that combined with being rather lazy about it for a bit kinda made me hit a brick wall when I went to art school and all the kids who studied that stuff rigorously just blew my shitty art out of the water. So after that, and a bad bout with Lyme which made me have to go on medical leave, I’ve been grinding, studying, doing stuff from observation, and just generally not taking my resources for granted, and while I’m nowhere near where I want to be still, I do feel like I’ve grown a lot and have left that obstinate mentality behind.

That I could make progress just by looking at art without studying or making any art of my own. Perfectionism too.

I'll never be able to draw well, and it bugs me beyond belief. I just look at a blank canvas and I freeze. I'm sort of okay when I'm just doodling and not knowing I have to show the art to anyone.
