**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I've been reading this book. The ways for effective practice is interleaving and spacing.

So for example I'm trying to copy a piece of art I like. Could interleaving be drawing the body pose for day, next day focus on the face, third day focus on the colours?

Also I've found forcing myself to draw from immagination has helped.

ah i see what you were getting at now. I think it is just the perspective on the right arm being off.

I was talking about the left arm not the right. i figured you were looking at the contour of the drapery on the left arm as though it were the limb itself. it seems that we were simply talking about different things.

Imagine investing time and effort trying to explain to someone in great detail so they can turn back and say nu-uh! this isn't written in muh japanese anmay moonrunes therefore your comments are invalidated! Worst of all this insufferable prick has continued to draw in the same exact incoherent and incomplete manner for years now which just goes to show that he is not here to grow instead he's here to disrupt and continue to be a nuisance for everybody that has tried to help him. "in the last 18 months i've probably skimmed through all the resources that /ic/ talks about. these are the ones i chose to spend time with, in chronological order:
keys to drawing
watt's atelier video lessons
scott robertson's how to draw
scott eaton's anatomy
eric olson's perspective lectures
hitokaku
i'm definitely not saying that these are the ideal resources, and i'm certain that the order was suboptimal. i say this because i know that /ic/ is stupidly obsessed with minmaxing the optimal path. also i'll mention that i'm kind of a shitbag and i didn't fully complete any one of these, i just jumped ship when i thought i got what i needed. if there's anything else in particular you want specifics on, just let me know."

i use the first brush in this pack (さらぺん), i didn’t really mess with the settings. stabilization 0. it has a lot of behavioral similarities to microns, which i really enjoy using. don't worry about the a4 stuff unless you're printing your work, because you also have to take dpi into account. if you're just starting out, i would just open a canvas that's around 2000 pixels in each dimension and start sketching. lower the resolution if your computer is slowing down, raise the resolution if you find that the pixels are too large. use raster layers until you know what you're doing

Hey, I've known about these thread for quite sometime but never really posted here. Is it fine for more advanced anime-styled artists to post here? I feel I am somewhat more advanced than some anons here but I try my best to make it appear as it's drawn by an eastern as much as possible with some little tidbits of my own to make it appear a bit different. If that makes sense? But I feel a bit self-conscious about how my drawings look and feel they miss the mark to make it appear more eastern sometimes.

I see, thanks for answering my question. Also, when you're sketching (whether using reference or straight from imagination), do you use different layers? This one I made in 30 minutes using real life reference, all in single raster layer. Sorry for noobs question, I'm really new into drawing let alone digital drawing.

when i'm doing it mindfully, i would set a goal. for example, those pics, i was trying to figure out the relationship and spacing between the eyes, brows, and nose. i found a pentagon in front view, and then i found the same slightly warped pentagon on a slightly turned view. from there, i tried to recreate the relationships using that pentagon's proportions. after that, i would assess whether i achieved the look and appeal or not. if not, i take some notes on why i think that is, and then i try again one more time with that in mind before moving on. mostly i focus on deconstructing and finding relationships when i copy.
i also do a lot of mindless copying where i'm just trying to keep the hand moving and i'm not really thinking about too much, just trying to capture the silhouette and big picture. i think you'll need some basic skills like keeping proportion, and seeing perspective properly, in order to get the most out of copying
>>4468284
yeah, scott robertson did mention that briefly. i also do a lot of peter han's dynamic sketching (or draw a box) exercises in pen. i found myself focusing on what's important instead of fussing around when i ditched the ability to erase
>>4468318
i mostly just sketch on one layer. my finished works have an ungodly amount of unnamed layers, but for sketching, i want to emulate a traditional experience. to that end, i like to hit tab to hide the UI so i don't think about all the controls and distracting parts of working digitally
>>4468393
just directly with ink. if it becomes too messy or if i want a cleaner drawing, i just draw it again while ditching some of the construction i used previously. ditching the pencil wasn't an easy transition though. i should also mention that this is only for the sake of improving. i would use a pencil if i'm planning on making presentable piece

Thanks, I don't know if you felt the same way as I do before starting, but there's much fear about making wrong lines and just destroying the drawing, even when I draw with a simple BIC pen, I always do the construction lightly and then apply harder lines to make the drawing.

It is okay to copy.

Pic related is from the foreword of that popular アニメ私塾 book by a guy in the Japanese anime industry. See the triangle?
>上手い絵の模写: 上手い人の絵の記号(絵のパターン)を手に入れる
>Copying good drawings: acquiring the symbols of skilled people's drawings (the patterns of the drawings)
>実物の線画化:実物を理解することで、上手い人の絵が理解できる
>Real life drawing: by understanding real life, we can understand skilled people's drawings
>創作活動全般: 落書きや作品制作
>General original creation: sketching, complete OC works etc

Quote from the foreword:
>こうして、学生時代は「自主制作アニメを作る」「上手い絵の模写」「実物の線画化」のトライアングルを繰り返すことで劇的に上達していき、絵を描き始めてからわずか3年でスタジオジブリの入社試験に合格することができました。
>In this way, I made extreme progress during my school years by repeating a triangle of doing my own original anime drawings, copies of good drawings, and life drawings, and only 3 years after picking up drawing I was able to pass Studio Ghibli's employment test.

He was 19 when he started drawing.

Pic related also shows drawings from before he started practising deliberate copying as well as his original anime drawings from ~2 years after that.

I don't think you entirely understand what exactly these morons believe copying is. These guys insist upon copying off anime screenshots that are designed to look good in motion and meet a budget sacrificing details that you would normally find through life drawing. By copying off amawus you will inherit bad habits such as the sidemouths used in the animations without knowing why they're there thinking it is part of the style when in fact it is there as an abstraction of forms to save time and labor. Another example is the missing tip of the lips whenever an Amawu smiles, it's just another abstract form designed to look good in motion that has its origins based from life. If you do not understand the concept of abstract forms, why we use them and most importantly where they originated form you will fail to use it properly thinking it is just a style and as a consequence you will end up with results that you will need to unlearn before you can improve again.

Copying anime will help you learn anime stylization. That's all there is to it. You're constructing strawmen and moving goalposts. If you have a problem with what you're describing there, you should be talking about that instead of shitting on copying in general. You're a nobody and if you don't like copying there's no need for you to stay in this thread. Even if you think people in this thread are retarded copyfags that's fine, just leave and let us be. That's why despite your professing of fundamental skills you still don't understand the form of the head or how to appealingly stylize it, and you got completely BTFO by a far superior artist that you were trying to shit-talk over it. That's why whenever a skilled artist who goes against your autistic doctrine that has gotten you effectively 0 results shows up, you come up with 100 excuses as to why their situation is different and you aren't REALLY wrong, they're just lying or being misleading. You know everything, and everyone else knows nothing. You don't need anyone's advice, because you're already perfect. Good think the sketchfag is gone; if he had stuck around any longer then you might have had to confront the fact that you and him are exactly the same.

When you got hired to draw your japanese animes the first thing studios train you is how to trace properly for MONTHS. You will just trace and trace drawings until you get it accurately. If you trace it poorly the lines will boil on screen. That's how most animators start in their career. If you can't even do this after training period you'll probably will get fired before doing real work.

Of course you're going to be doing that, you're animating a motion picture and taking sketches from another artist, cleaning it up and essentially doing the line art by charting around the drawing. The problem is that begs will misconceive that as an essential learning method because their favorite animay artist does it when in fact they're not learning anything at all.

Even after you got promoted to key, you will still have to copy the characters and locations accurate and on model. If you can't, someone with better drawing skills will correct your attempt at copying with notes and guides, and again you will have to trace that correction unto your work.

Charting over your initial sketch to portray your line art is an essential skill, yes but when it comes to learning how to draw from scratch it will prove to be a moot approach. If it's going to take years for some of you to realize all that copying has been handicapping you it's going to be a lot more difficult having to unlearn all that crap you got from someone tracing over a rough to meet a deadline. You of all people should know that in animation you're simplifying and tuning forms so that they look good in motion. As someone who's learning how to draw this is a disastrous way to learn from something that has been diluted in order to meet a budget.

Copying and tracing is how you learn how to draw, for anime, in my opinion. It might be different for other forms of art, but this is the "anime study thread," right?

>You of all people should know that in animation you're simplifying and tuning forms so that they look good in motion
You literally need good drafting and drawing skills beforehand in order to do this convincingly, and you get that by copying and learning from artists better than you.

You do that by flipping the paper. You compare your drawing to the original, if its shaking then its no good. In digital, you can do that by turning your drawing layer on/off and compare.

It's not as easy as it sounds, especially when you have to do hundreds of these with accuracy. My tendency to chicken scratch was gone after this experience.

Nick? Wow. congrats man.
Did Norio also use digital? I know he did for his Land of Lustrous animation. What software did you use? I guess it's Animate CC since Science Saru used it. Also, what's the real difference between 1st KA and 2nd KA? If I remember correctly there's also something called LO which is to my surprise, it means rough animation and not the actual layout (please correct me if I got it wrong). Was it like that in your case (doing 2nd KA job)? Cleaning LO from other animators?

No, I am not him.
Using CSP for LO and 2nd KA. Doesn't really matter what software you use as long as you deliver the product they want.
1st KA, also called ichigen is the rough.
What the 2nd KA does is clean it up and make it more on model based on AD's corrections, while following the motion of the 1st KA. Basically redrawing what the 1st KA did. LO is literally layout, it's where the character's are placed in correct perspective and locations according to storyboard, ichigen is the extension to that, making movements based on LO.

All ideals and stylized figures are derived from life, yes? Consider the history of how the animu style came to be - it was inspired by Disney and even Disney heavily derived its idealized and stylized figures from life. If you are proficient in the fundamentals and understand the concepts behind abstract forms used in these heavily stylized figures such as side mouths no harm done in charting lines from other artists but the entire basis of the argument we're having here is for somebody who is learning and wants to skip ahead to stylizing figures they will find out the hard way how crucial it is to understand real world figures, and the how we get to these "symbols" or abstract forms that are simplified and translated into what is essentially shape language that implies form rather than portray it.

Oh, thanks for answering my question. Between CSP, Animate, and TVPaint, which one do you like more? I know Kou Yoshinari created amazing animation (and compositing) with TVPaint, lot of amazing animators like Kawano at Studio Colorido use it too.

>>4470105
I'm not animator but my friends made it through connection. Basically, twitter. Post your work online, use tag that easily discoverable, join a community like Zettai Absolute. Frend of mine goes with traditional route like applying to certain studios though. Basically built a portfolio, tumblr, personal blog, youtube, twitter.
Though I have to remind you that being animator for anime doesn't pay that much, compared to what western cartoon offers.

In order for you to draw from imagination you need to learn to work with abstract forms, develop a methodological approach by putting down your concept on canvas with the use of thumbnail roughs, silhouettes, quick sketch, anything to help you visualize the idea so you can later refine it with forms in space. But in order for you to do that you need to have common sense as someone has put clearly here.
