**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

i pick a different artist or mangaka every 2 months, then just start copying on tracing paper for the whole day. After like a few days I attempt to draw on a normal piece of paper with the reference in front of me. Eventually after a few weeks or a month or 2. I try to draw from memory without a reference, I do this in my sketchbook.

I literally do this for 8+ hours everyday. 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours at night. All you need is drive, motivation, and time. Hopefully I will develop my own style soon.

>Copy drawings you like.
>Draw from imagination sometimes.
>Go through good courses from good teachers.
>Try and study things from life, draw them, think about why they are the way they are visually.

This is basically the routine of a good student. After some years you can go and balance this to have most of your output from your imagination (memory), but that's it, there's no secret or anything special.

Drawing is just the methodic application of the fundamentals, and the fundamentals are mostly learned through methodic practice.

Get a kid that has drawn for 10 years, mostly copying manga he likes and drawing what he wants from imagination, you'll see that he'll have strong fundamentals if the artists he copies have those as well.

Practice is the most essential, the rest of what you can do can only assist it.

>> No.4440092

>>4440066
You shouldn't think of the fundamentals as something that makes the process go faster. Fundamentals reworded just means being able to draw good. If you can draw good, then studying another aspect of drawing obviously will be much easier. The fundamentals are already marked in the sticky if you want a refresher. They're just basic principles that never change.

You're not going to "figure out" anime proportions by asking people here. You need to spend thousands of hours drawing and comparing with your own eyes. There's no hurt in asking that type of question, but if you're not stupid you surely realize that a picture says more than a thousand words in this case.

There's nothing stopping you from hunting down a bunch of character sheets with front/side shots of characters. You can load them up beside images of real people and compare. Will you suddenly internalize anime proportions by doing this? No. You must practice

>I just can't figure out how to stop rapidly oscillating between an intuition/copy approach and a fundies approach.
Here's an approach: 1. draw from imagination (while looking at tutorial/refs/anatomy diagrams) 2. copy your favorite artists (this is where you learn anime proportions) 3. draw from life/do perspective studies. The time you choose to allocate to either of these every day is up to you. If you keep these three steps in your head and draw a lot, the experience gained from drawing (and failing) will tell you which one is most important at the present.

>> No.4440110

>You need to spend thousands of hours drawing and comparing with your own eyes.
Yeah. I get that. I'm doing that. Was just really frustrated today is all. It's unbelievably discouraging to hear "learn fundies" as a response to everything I draw and no one can explain what fundies are or how to practice them. I've looked for the knowledge, I've read Loomis, I promise. Still can't make an anime eye look right on a character who is looking very down and away. If you have refs please post them.
There's also that thread up with the faggot who was saying "if you're not good after 300 hours you should just quit" and that really, really got to me. I know he's wrong. But at the same time, still being this bad after investing so much time does start to shake my confidence.

It's so simple, people don't get it because they don't want to. The reality is that the more time you invest on copying, the better you are. If you aren't at the level for copying something, then tracing might be a good idea, then you try copying it again, then try drawing from memory.

Little by little you'll develop a visual library and gain draftsmanship from the sheer hours you put into it, just like that guy puts 8 hours every fucking day.

Then comes anon, anon draws 1 hour every day, "why am I not good?". Well...

I'd still recommend doing some courses and reading books so that you're learning from masters as well, but 90% of your skill I'd say will come from practice, and 90% or so of your practice should be copying shit from others. When you get good you can balance this more and draw more from memory, but until then you need to put in the hours.

I'm probably abusing this analogy at this point but it's important to realize that learning to draw is difficult, just like picking up piano or whatever. Nobody is gonna play piano for 300 hours and be good. It's still Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Gymnopédie No. 1, scales and maybe some sheet reading, I don't know. Imagine a pro pianist at a concert. That's pretty much the equivalent to whatever star animator or god pixiv illustrator you're pining for. They've been doing it seriously for a long time.

Again, drawing from imagination, copying your idols, drawing from life/learning perspective. The rest is up to your brain. Luckily most people can get super good at drawing if they think critically and don't mope around like a little bitch. If you're on 4chan and formulating sentences you can theoretically learn it.

If somebody simply tells you to "learn fundamentals" from now on, please just ignore it. The fundamentals are as deep as an abyss, depending on whom you ask only a modern 3D render engine can reach it. This doesn't mean that the word is taboo, I simply mean that it's terribly abstract/bad as actual critique. Consider constructive critique, like, "her eyes are placed too high" or "ears too small".

Pic related is a simple demonstration of how you might use references to learn proportion (and other things). It actually works. But don't just look at it like an idiot, draw it yourself in your drawing program. Why not copy what I did, with your own references? Maybe it turns out better. At any rate, if you post it in this thread we can all give advice to each other.

true. you can't compare mechanical ability i.e. monkey see monkey do to creative ability. but if you can't do the former, the chances of being able to do the latter is 0%. even if you have ideas you won't be able to realize them. that's why all the classical composers could play an instrument at least half decently. the japs understand this and that's why they copy so much to get good

With music, if someone asked "hey, do you think its a waste to learn to play smoke on the water?", people might think he's legit retarded.

*imagination* is just memory, if you want to be able to draw something from *imagination*, first think about what it is that you want to draw.

do you want to draw a girl like, say, ryuko from Kill la Kill? Copy her, then after 5min try to draw it from *imagination*, you'll strain your brain trying to think how to do it, next time you try it will be easier. Do this until you can draw characters like her easily.

Also don't color your shit until you have a basic grasp on drawing, if your drawing is shit, coloring/rendering won't make it good.

I don't really like starting by drawing the side of the head after drawing the sphere. Maybe if I studied the skull more that'd be easier, but if you're a beginner you're going to have a hard time knowing where to draw it. I find it much easier to draw in the chin first like Pin2D seems to do.

This only confirms my suspicions that there's a double standard for copyfags and fundiesfags. If a copyfag draws like shit he's a retard, failure, shows that fundies is the only way, etc. if a fundiesfag draws like shit then that's totally based and look at how much he's improving and surely he's on the right path to success. It's so blatant.
>you seem to think that there's some secret material that'll rocket you to a master
No. I literally do not. I think the exact opposite of that. I think the only way to get good is a shitload of practice and trial and error. If anyone thinks that there's secret knowledge, it's the fundiesfags. Their answer to literally every mistake in someone's work is "Loomis/fundies". What in the world am I supposed to take from that except, knowing Loomis/fundies will allow you to draw well? But when you push them it always turns into "no just knowing Loomis won't help you draw well, it's actually Loomis plus thousands of hours of practice plus all this other shit will allow you to draw well". Which is a hell of a disclaimer to forget to include.

the anatomy is really beg , it's way more complicated than just learning the lenght of the limbs and such im still stuck there, the leg barely has any form in both girls, the knee on that girl it's atrocious, i cant give you the anatomy breakdown on that i havent touched that yet, but it definitely doenst look like that so heres more or less somethign that does lok more like a leg , also you are placing the bone in the middle of the leg thats wrong, or more like theres more fat in the inner leg, and the arm jsut like the leg 0 form, the triceps when is relaxed and pressend against or just close to the body it looks bigger, it doesn't have too look hyper realistic but at least make that change visible , but those arms have 0 form like did you even studied anatomy not even memeing. and for the head the eyes are way too sunked on the left and his forehead is almost in a 45 grades angle and i feel the ear is a bit too far , maybe his head needs to be abit more bigger in the back but desu the head it's probably the thing you can give you more space? to do it in your own way just don't put the ear too far back or too close to the eyes

Thank you so much for this this is exactly what I was looking for! I was working on the lineart and I did fix the head when doing the lineart. Does the position of the right characters eye look alright? I struggled a bit with that.
Also do you have some recommendations of where I can learn anatomy similar to your style? Like "the bone in the middle of the leg" makes so much sense. I was starting loomis but maybe I didnt get far enough to learn how you did.
Thanks again though!

the best book imo to learn anatomy is anatomy for sculptors however is more an anatomy book than a how to draw anatomy, the eyes onthe right or her left, it kinda looks flat but i think it's good enough for now and her eyebrow the thinner part should be pointing down a bit more, as for the anatomy i know you didn't ask for it but is still showing major problems but i wont tell you to stop drawing however just keep in mind that most of your anatomy problems are because you don't know it ,even the simple details, pic related it's how you should see the body as you draw this makes it so easy to know how to convey those forms more realistic im not talking about realistic as an style

Learning to copy a reference image is probably the most important thing you can learn and it should be something you learn to do if you are interested in dramatically improving.
First let me just say this as concisely as possible. If you cannot copy another image/photo faithfully, what chance do you have of giving your own concepts and ideas any justice. If you cannot copy a face and get the proportions right how will you be able to visualize one in your head and do the same.

Copying is easier then drawing from scratch. You can make observations and comparisons. It's less draining emotionally and physically. Overall its the perfect way of knowing how well you handle your pencil.

I'm not saying here that you must faithfully reproduce and image to be do this well but you must be able to capture the essence of a drawing/photograph with no anxiety or frustration. This will transfer into your art as you gain confidence in your individual strokes as well as gathering innate knowledge on anatomy, facial relationships and various other shapes and concepts.

As someone whose dipped in and out of this and finally put hand to the grindstone its clear to me ignoring this for as long as I did as a core part of my learning was a mistake on my part.

Here is my suggestion if you want to see some serious improvements in your hand control and line confidence. Every image you save or fave on those social sites you frequent you need to consider those drawings to tackle. Your goal is to absorb something from them, not just save or fave em for later. Save em in a folder or throw them in tabs. Tackle them DAILY. I MEAN THIS. Your job is to clear this queue. Cram your line art on a page in a sketch pad. Just pound through all the parts of drawing you like or focus on things you week with.

Actually, I think Sakugabooru needs to be added to OP link for resources:

You can find literally thousands of settei/character designs there, even key animation/genga.

You should study a little bit of fundies. Like how the body arches back and make it looks natural. Well, the original art you copied is okay, probably the head is a bit unnatural, but it has good forms other wise (the way she stretched her arms and back). My suggestion is to look at this good redlining/correction book from animator Kiyotaka Oshiyama.
https://exhentai.org/g/1508582/e58c305af2/

The book is a collection of corrections he gave to people who submitted their arts to him.
