IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it.

Huh, the "you would make a good horror artist" was right.
The thing about making intentionally ugly/off-putting art (I'm including horror in this) is that your execution has to be REALLY on point, otherwise it'll just look, well, bad and ugly. Compared to drawing cute things, even if it's rough and has flaws, at least it's still cute. So you'll have to deal with people not liking your art for a really long time until your technical skill matures.

If something "doesn't look 3D", shadows are almost never the answer. You can make things look 3D using only contour lines and wrapping lines. A line drawing of a cube looks 3D even with no shadows, the Loomis ball with lines on it looks 3D even with no shadows. If something doesn't look 3D, you need to fix the underlying structure, don't just start adding shadows and colors in the hopes that it'll fix it.
Find some pictures of real tiddies and just trace the outlines of them, then compare those drawings to yours.

>most anime characters only recognizable features are their hair and outfit?

This line of thinking is exactly why the meme of "westerners can't draw anime" will keep being perpetrated.

Generally, the "anime" style does remove a lot of features of the face, but the whole point of drawing fanart is to pay tribute to the original material. If you try to force semi-realistic facial features on your ANIME fanart then your ANIME drawing is going to come out looking like shit and people will have to ask you who you are actually drawing because the original wasn't drawn with your trademark tumblr anime nose.

It's simply a fact that the most distinctive thing about most anime characters is their hair. This isn't to say there aren't different and/or character-specific ways of drawing the facial features of course. You posted Slayers which has very distinctive faces.
Anyway, not sure why you're making this into an east vs west thing. Asukafag's drawings don't look like that because he's "western", they look like that because he sucks.

Post your work and people can tell you what's wrong.
There's really no such thing as "anime styled lines". They're just lines. In fact if you pull up any frame from an anime you will usually see the same exact thin black lines of uniform weight around everything, they have to be kept simple due to the constraints of animation.

There's nothing wrong with your lines. The problem is your shapes, proportions, etc. The problem is your actual drawing itself.
Your drawings will look like anime when your body parts and facial features have anime proportions and are arranged correctly on the paper. There's no "fix" to achieve this, there's no tool. It's just called, learning how to draw.

Try tracing over some professional anime drawings. Just lines, no colors. Even with shaky line quality, the traced drawings will look way more "like anime" than your original ones. This will prove to you that it's not the lines that make anime, but rather the structure of the drawing itself.

>Asukafag's drawings don't look like that because he's "western"
Disagree, adding realistic facial features (disregarding the quality drawn) when there's no such thing on the original material is a "mistake" that I see many western artists makes when they draw fanart of anime. This is asukafag's first major issue.

>(...) they look like that because he sucks.
Agreed, asukafag's second issue is that there's a sea of references for what the character he's drawing looks like on the internet but somehow he settles on drawing Asuka like that. I agree with you that the most distinctive thing about most anime characters are their hair, but that doesn't mean you can just draw a random woman's head, slapped them with an anime hairdo and accessories and call it a day.

same way you learn literally any other skill, start from basic and then keep climbing.

learning how to draw is kinda like learning maths, if your brain can wrap around new concepts easily it's smooth sailing if you keep grinding, if your brain don't get something the only thing you can do is keep banging your head on the wall until one day you get it eventually.

the good thing with art though is that there isn't necessarily a right answer to all of this so as long as you are satisfied with the outcome that all it matters.

What size and resolution as well as zoom do you work on for your digital drawings? I tried to work at either a postcard or 1080 at 300 dpi at at least 100% even though sometimes i find my self going in further. I'm finding it hard to really do detailed work or get a decently "thin" line because it always look a bit to thick or blurry. Any suggestions to get around this? Idk if it's something to with the brushes I'm using (sometimes I use DUAB's pencil brushes or the default colored pencil in CSP) or it's how I'm working or mindset.

Break down the human body in smaller cubes, put those in a foreshortened box and distort the smaller cubes proportionally to the bigger box. Also it helps finding the middle of the body when you cross the corners so you know where the middle is, do it a few more time and you'll get more guidelines showing the 1/4 parts of where the body goes, unnecessary to do these since you can just eyeball the body, but it's helpful for complex architecture.

Also, I've been wondering about this for a while
The shading in this guy's drawings are very nice, however a lot of the characters are fair skinned
You wouldn't know that the two characters in the pic I posted are olive skinned and brown if you didn't already know the characters
Should I leave most of a fair skinned character's body unshaded? I mean, the areas where shadows are cast still receive shading but most or at least half of their skin would just be white
Like, if I tried shading in pic related except with pencil instead of color, wouldn't I use less of the pencil? His skin is much lighter here.
The girl that he's with has considerably darker skin than his in most circumstances.
