The apple pencil on CSP simulates tilt really well. Even changes the texture. I think maybe there's a height map or something involved.

Literally this dumb method is why the shading in all of Proko's drawings looks like garbage.
I mean just look at the shaded areas in that gif. It looks like TV static. Is that how you want your drawings to look?

Sure. I've posted this on /ic/ a few times already since I haven't done any really detailed pencil studies in a while. Shaded with only the tip of the pencil. If you have better work that you did using the side of the pencil then please post it.

My issue with this method is that it has been developed into THE standard by the Fixler/Watts/Proko lineage but really only works the way they show it when you use smooth newsprint (many sheets clipped together or in a pad).
It’s a very specific setup and newsprint yellows and ages like milk.

>> No.4375632

>>4375623
Who is it even the standard for? Almost every animator or comic I've ever seen working has used the writing grip and the tip of the pencil. Digital artists obviously work with the tip of the stylus.

>>4375597
Fwiw, The side of the black conte pencil thing comes from Fred Fixler who taught Watts, Orbik, Westermoe and others. It’s generally intended for large masses and reasonably quick drawings/sketches and only works great on smooth newsprint.
For detailed, high-finish, long poses, the Reilly people used better paper and would take the time to use the tip.
Vilppu and the NMA people use a similar method with pastel pencils. Maybe it’s a Cali thing.

>> No.4375639

>>4375632
Their own standard. It’s like a lineage. If you learn(ed) from them, thats what you learn(ed).
My guess is because Fred Fixler, who was very influential in his day taught using the Reilly method which heavily emphasized tone and shadow shapes for achieving realism and compositional dynamism. The guys he taught did a lot of movie posters and commercial Illustrations and stuff like that - and you can see the method quite easily in their work.

It’s a tonal thing to help train your ability to paint, it takes much less time to render with than vine charcoal and rough paper (you don’t need to blend), provides both soft and crisp edges, trains your hand dexterity to be very extremely sensitive, uses smooth newsprint not just because it’s the best paper for the method but because it’s very cheap and fragile (fragile to train you to think before you act and ruin the paper, cheap materials because art materials are generally expensive) working in greyscale as to teach you your values(which is the most important part to learning color), and it’s very expressive pencil. In short it’s to teach you to paint while saving a ton of money.

I'm sincerely and utterly impressed that this board, meant for art, is not aware of what OP is talking about. Infinite Painter, you bunch of niggers, one of the apps that competes with Procreate on the iPad and basically dominates on Android. Hell, even fucking Jama Jurabev posted to artstation some pieces using the software, its brushengine is stellar and it's overall more solid in most aspects than the competition. I think it only loses to artstudio pro due to not really being a Photoshop replacement, in which artstudio excels at.

The proko pencil is just the default pencil in the app, which is simply the best at mimicking conté sticks digitally.

Since y'all don't seem to know about iPad apps, here's a list of a few to try out:
-CSP
-Procreate
-Infinite Painter
-Adobe Fresco
-Medibang
-Affinity
-Artstudio pro
-Craft pro
-Autodesk sketchbook
-Paintstorm
-Artrage

> Calling it 'better art' because of how you use your medium
Art is not made by your pencil, your canvas or your software. Art is not even made by an artist. The viewer is the one who interpretes the work. So it's irrelevant if you use software or traditional media. The only important things are, how appealing your art looks (for the viewer!) and how the work touches the viewer in an emotional way. You as an artist can focus on technique like anatomy and good values or certain stylization. But that's not relevant for the viewer. He/She makes art. Not the artist. Especially not the kind of pen or brush the artist uses. There is good in shitty art in both: digital and traditional media.

I though OP was asking for a traditional comparison, sorry anon misread, anyway if it's a digital brush why don't you just rip the settings from the program, the parameters don't differ that much, Here's a similar one I found online for CSP, though I can't demonstrate it because no tilt orz
