I'm this anon. This is my drawing from day 18. I feel like I've improved throughout this month but I don't really have a clue how to shade with my brush pen. I feel like I got the foreshortening decent in this post but the arms are a little wonky.

I’d keep a regular pen around for shading so that you can do some quick hatching. Brush ink + pen hatching can look really good when done together.

minor gripes. her eye is huge and everything from about the nose/eye up is out of proportion/perspective.

design your shadow shapes with the terminal first. it's a blobby mess with bad shape. you don't have to go full, greasy jeff watts. just anything you'll find mapping out the shadows will improve the figure immensely. look how much info he can lay in in 3-5 minutes. then the rendering is easy mode after. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKfsZaNrmzM&t=12m

experiment with putting a block of tone or something behind the figure on the shadow or light side so you can lose edges and get more contrast. you really don't need to have worried about her left arm at all if you can lose it in a shadow. another thing is that it's ok to change the reference. the area by her hand holding the stick could have a changed angle so that you can still see overlap of the stick and her body, but another shape between her hand and torso. this would also fix the tangent of her knuckles and the upper arm/armpit.

This might sound stupid but, where do you guys look when you draw? I don't mean looking at the model, but the page. Do you focus on small details you're drawing? Do you pick a midpoint and use your peripheral vision to see the bigger shapes? Do you try to unfocus your vision so as to not tunnel-vision certain parts of the figure/ref?
I've recently learned this is a big thing and I never see it mentioned/talked about.

What?

You need to look at all parts. Mostly staring at the model, then focusing on the whole page and where you are working.. details etc. So it's not one or the other, it's all of it.

Periodically looking at a different part of your composition.. or even rotating the whole thing or stepping far away.. all serve important roles in helping you 'see' it more clearly. Changing perspective is important.

>> No.4391684

>>4391681
(cont) Basically I'm trying to see that details are important and that's the zoom in and work close kind of work.. but more important are the way all of your parts work together so it visually makes sense as a whole, and for that you can't stay mentally/visually zoomed in... so i'd say most of the time your focus should be somewhat loose or zoomed out a bit... again it's not one or the other.

>> No.4391686

>>4391684
(cont2) The analogy I would use would be for driving a vehicle.. Most of the time you are relaxing your focus and being aware of the overall picture in front of you.. whereas periodically you need to focus in on some details, like another car, the road turning, a street sign. So you need both.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm trying to work on my accuracy from ref without sitting there and measuring forever or using a grid. It's really hard to pinpoint what I'm doing wrong sometimes, but I will try to work on seeing the bigger picture more.

Real life models use it for balance when doing poses for a long time. It's a lot easier to hold your arm out and keep it steady for 20 minutes if you put the weight into a pole against the ground. It also helps the artist compose and measure proportions by splitting the body up.

Long flowing lines vs chicken scratch. Should I be just using these long flowing lines for gestures and larger initial shapes? Or try to use them for everything?
