I think he was tracing photos for his architectural stuff. He made money during the period he applied to art school by hand coloring prints made of photos of picturesque views around the city...which is basically what his paintings like that were. They're too accurate, compared to his other work, which were poorly constructed, like this one.

Hitler didn't design the swastika, he borrowed it from other groups trying to overthrow the Weimar Republic. A german businessman discovered it. It's an interesting story. I've always been interested in the design aesthetic of the Third Reich, putting aside their politics and what they did, they had STYLE, and damned good graphical design sense, and Hitler had little if anything to do with it.
