My take is that when sharing things you created, it gets more personal. When you shitpost some random meme on /v/ or whatever you don't really care how they respond, but when you post something you worked hard to create, you really want people to like what you created, so the shitflinging gets more volatile because of personal attachment to your art. A board filled with people shitting on and laughing at people's art is bound to hurt some fee fees.

I don't know but I almost never encountered negativity here when asking for critiques. People have always been helpful and nice to me.

I came to 4chan in 2006 and it's true that people have always complained about this place but I think you're completely wrong when you say that it's always been "shit" as if it's the same now as it was then. Back then most users were actual nerds and not lurking was frowned upon but now 4chan has a lot of users who see it as a secondary place where it's "ok" to shitpost, as if 4chan were some sort of cumrag. If people who primarily use tumblr/twitter/instagram/facebook/reddit somehow were removed from here I believe it would indeed be a lot more pleasant to use for us who just post our work/discuss art tech and don't participate in /vent/ shit or artist gossip threads
