IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

The fact that a finished painting I'll spend hours on would most likely turn out terrible scares me. I keep feeling that the time spent on that drawing would be a waste cause it looks bad. This results in a bunch of sketches like this one and barely anything complete.

That might be the case, I've only been drawing for about a month now and I started Loomis fun with a pencil from day one and got frustrated with the practice that I did.
I'll try it again when I get some more hours done and get more into the groove of drawing without stressing too much about it.

just enjoy drawing and the shit that you fuck up on is the shit you need to study, study isn't a prerequisite to drawing it's what you do between drawings. you'll burn out if making proper shit is too hard, takes too long and doesnt make you feel good when you finish it, but then if you study something to improve and then try again you'll see improvement and the experience will be less painful and you'll be encouraged

ideally anyway

Head at a different angle. Eyes, mouth and hairline are all higher, though you didin't change the jawline. Move the whole face down a bit, and the nose to the right, and try flipping the mouth horizontally - the curve is wrong, but it looks a bit like you might just have had the reference the wrong way around when you drew it. Oh, and the left ear should poke out less.
Your neck is a bit thinner in proportion to the rest, and I think it might be slightly off-centre. It could just be that the left shoulder is slightly pointier, changing the silhouette of the shoulders.
Your eyes are also a bit less round, and the eyelashes shorter. Oh, and the forearms are at a different angle, and thinner. Those things don't matter as much, though.
Overall, I'd say it does look like the reference, in most important ways.

I'm new to digital art and the multiply layer thing confuses me. Some famous artist uploaded a lineart drawing with the layer set on multiply and when I colour over on a lower layer, the lines go darker. However when I draw my own lineart while setting the layer to multiply and colouring the layer under it, it doesn't make a difference if its set to normal or multiply.

Why does this happen?

I haven't posted here in a couple of months.

I am trying to draw two characters I like kissing each other, so I drew a couple of pages of heads and various heads kissing each other. Do you guys have any advice or critique on if I am doing this right? I was also practicing the anime "shark nose" thing but I don't feel like I could ever get it right.

I know "don't draw anime" but the two characters I want to kiss are anime characters, so, while I typically hate anime/imitating anime, it's going to be required for the image.

Would love to hear what you guys think and I'll respond later, it's 7am and I gotta go to bed.

some bits are darker because you went over them twice, the amount of graphite loaded onto the page additional to the density of marks (i.e. hatches that are close or far apart) contribute to the value/darkness.

basically just dont go over your shading when you're happy with the value, or if one bit is too dark you can erase and retry or make everything else darker (though the latter could accumulate and just lead to very dark drawings)

I'm /beg/ tier too, but judging from the thumbnail the moon isn't bright enough; when you do night/low light photography bright things will be over exposed while things in shadow will be more visible. I'd also suggest making the moon just a bit smaller, make the waves a bit brighter, then move and enlarge your figure so that it contrasts better with the background. I'd also make the figure just slightly brighter. If you have to use a multiply or overlay layer so that it's easier. That's all I got off the top of my head.

there is no point in overdoing it at the start, nor in trying different things
i think the best way to start is drawing a face using reference, its not creative at all but it can give you some solid ground
try to meassure where the eyebrows, nose, mouth and chin belong in a face, then the distance between the eyes, then the relation between the eyes and the mouth, the eyes and the ears and the mouth abd the jaw, even try to understand how the hairline works
all of this can teach you how to not fuck up proportion and when i sat place i mean place, not draw. You place them first, then you figure out the size each part is suppossed to be, you are going to fuck up the eyes a lot, there is no shame in that, just look at the japanese

Yeah I'm just trying to get a feel for it for now, I'm doing better than I was the previous month, that was essentially just a stick figure made with blocks.
I might be overworking myself at the moment but I need to put in a lot of time before I start to see any improvement at all, the last thing I want is to spend 10 years before I can make something that looks even remotely presentable because I only spent 1 hour a week on drawing.
Current goal is to put 164 minutes in per day to get to 1000 hours by the end of the year.
I'm splitting this up into reading theory and actual drawing practice, so I can use both my hands and my brain to their full use in the time I have available.

I dont really care about making "art" in any real way like most people on /ic/, I just want to be able to draw characters at some point, but I know I need to keep it slow and grind away till I build up the theory and muscle memory for it.
I still have 330 days remaining in 2020 so there's still some time for improvement.

Are there any exercises or anything that help with getting used to a drawing tablet? Ive had one for years but every time I use it I just feel frustrated because it feels so wonky compared to pencil on paper. Is one with a screen that you draw on directly inherently better for overcoming this? Am I just a faggot? Help me understand.

I just got my first pad after using pen/pencils and paper and boy is it weird. I feel like I completely have to relearn what the fuck I'm doing because of how hard it is for my brain to look at the screen and see the cursor move. It doesn't help that it's just a microsecond behind and that the dpi of the pen is not what I would naturally expect. As a result my lines are slanted, my ellipses rarely close, and just generally things are off.
Is this normal? Is there a resource where I can learn how to set this thing up or adjust to it? Would normally say fuck it and return it but I kinda need to eventually move on to digital work so here I am.

I've been frustrated with this shit my whole life.

FUCKING HUMANS and ANIMALS.

I can draw environments and robots and other miscellaneous shit just fine without a reference.

But when it comes to drawing figures from imagination, just no.

Human bodies and animal muscles vary so much. Some are more muscular, some or more fat.

I just wish there were a program with an insane amount of 3d models to work off of because without a good reference it's damn near impossible for me figure out proportions, especially when angles are involved.

I am truly amazed at how some people draw human figures without any reference and it looks great.

>> No.4351434

This is what I mean. Muscles twist and turn and change with different angles. It just kills me. And then you'll have different fat variances.

why don't people post albums of their work for critiques here? it's almost always just a single image, or a couple.

you can't give an accurate critique to someone when you only see a few examples of their work.

the other problem I see is people asking for specifics, that's useless. you want generalized advice that will apply to the brunt of your work. if a /beg/ posts a single image and works on it bit by bit they'll never get good.

look at conceptart forums and how it worked there, people posted bunch of shit and then they asked what to work on. instead of shit like "does this hand look right??" the only time you want specific advice is if you're working on something huge like an illustration that took you 20 hours.
